MMM - Lyon & Frawley talk Melbourne coach

Pre game there was some discussion between Garry Lyon and Danny Frawley about the vacant coaching position at Melbourne. These two are on the panel to help with the appointment. Frawley didn't discount the possibility of a young with time to develop the team over a period. He said we don't win ugly and the players don't hurt enough. We have a mature list and our younger players in their opinion are not superstars. There was no discussion on Mark Riley and the only talk about Chis Connolly centred on a caller's question which was neatly sidestepped.

The names on that consultation group are a little mystifying. A number of ex-players who have decided that coaching isn't for them (Lyon, Burke, Healy,Ingerson, Maclure) and some failed ex coaches (Frawley, Schwab) plus Rob Walls who won a flag 20 years ago! I'd feel a lot more confident if blokes like David Parkin were involved in some way. This group inspires very little confidence. In fact as I look at the names, I notice none of Lyon, Burke, Frawley, Ingerson or Healy were involved with any premierships.

What exactly did they say about our kids?

Because I'm sick of them getting no recognition (i.e Jones not getting a Rising Star nomination) and teams like Collingwood get all the attention when our kids are better than theirs.

I don't want Frawley anywhere near the panel. Would much rather Parkin.

Spot on about no superstars. That is why we need a top 3 pick. With luck we can pick up a real class act - but will not be a super dooper year 1 or 2. Brock or Col, Or Bate? could develop into supers in time. Most of our young players look like they are in the good plus category as is Bruce and Green at the moment. Also who knows what Newton and Dunn are capable of given time.

I do not necessarily worry about the mature list claim. That will be fixed before next season. A few of the 30's will be dropped off replaced by picks around 3 or 4, a pick around 20 and a third round in the mid/late 30's. So we should top up with some quality. If we finished say 6 or seven this year i would have been concerned with our list. Real class usually comes from the earlier picks.

You contradicted yourself there.

I would argue within 2 years time those 3 players all could possibly be superstars, especially McLean and Sylvia.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
