Well, it's half-time in the football and the umpires have a handy two goal lead.

In better news, the persistence of @Little Goffy has paid off and he is the first to solve the teaser.

For his efforts, LG has the honour of composing the wording on the MFC Cheer Squad banner vs any team of his choice. (Keep it nice, mate)

I'm thinking, alright? I used up all my brainjuice on the dozen guesses at the quiz.

Might go for the basic taunt, something like just the counter of 'Days since Essendon won a final', or a list of our players who weren't yet born at the time Essendon won a final.

Or maybe my personal football catchphrase, "Collingwood is a liability to Australian Football."

Or something intellectual but menacing sounding, harking back to the burst of latin earlier, and also a famous catchphrase, "Hawthorn delenda est".

But none of that is especially creative. My only really creative effort with football taunts is a totally unusable rework of the Western Bulldogs song; "Sons of incest". Fortunately only fragments remain in memory.

And here I was thinking this one was a bit of a gimme.

No puzzler may belittle their extremely intelligent followers with claims of simplicity for their puzzles.

Edit: And I believe you have filled the podium, so maybe...

Okay, time to put this one into its pyjamas, read it a story, tuck it into bed and kiss it goodnight.

As late entrant @Harvey Wallbanger correctly identified, all the players share their surname with a brand.

B: Coleman camping gear Weston biscuits Rivers clothing

H/B: Salem cigarettes Pert shampoo Gibson guitars

C: Bedford vehicles Swan beers Windsor caravans

H/F: Kent cigarettes Franklin caravans Clark rubber

F: Bailey ladders Johnson outboard motors Fox clothing

R: Marshall amps Martin guitars Parker pens

I/C: Stanley tools Scott tissues Cox mowers Sharp electronics

COACH: Simpson appliances

Now to explain all those clues which weren't the giveaways that they should have been:

1 - Homage to a well-known former Demon: Christian 'The Brand' Petracca.

2 - Bruce Reville -> B. Reville -> Breville: a well known brand.

3 - Through The Looking Glass - A tough one, being an oblique reference to the 70s band Looking Glass whose one bit hit was 'Brandy'.

4 - The puppy is the titular character in the movie 'Napoleon' -> Brandy

5 - Veteran Setter Of Puzzles - VSOP -> Brandy

6 - Photo of a young Russell Brand.

7 - Photo of a young Jo Brand.

Special mention to @kurtneverdied who not only made the link, but was also able to find a connection between all 23 names and guitars/amps.

Hmmmm....

And I presume you've forgotten to remind us of your '47' OP clue?

So many possible reactions, but I'll go with 'Well done!' 🙂

Signed, The Brand Of A Now Defunct Napa Valley California Winery Whose Memorabilia I Have A Piece Of So Everyone Is A Brand Somewhere! 😉

Not a clue! This was indeed my 47th in this interminable series of brainteasers.

Number 48 is in the bank, but all Demon minds now turn firstly to the draft and then onto the victory over North Melbourne next weekend.

Oops. Heinz had 57 varieties, not 47 😬

Anyways, somewhat on topic, what do these players have in common in the 2000s?...

Merenda, Porter, Alvey, Powell, Selby and Williams, at a slight stretch Pittonet, and at a bit more of a stretch, Picken and Drum?

Dare I say it's a bit of a too-easy gimme?

[Edit: p.s. 'The Brand': Chanel no.5?]

Did you mean Seaby? If so, they are all Traded Marks/Marcs/Marcuses, each having played for more than one club.

Ahh, it's time to start working on the team of players all delisted with a year left to run on their contract.

You'll be pleased to know this has even been systematically studied.

Simple scenario. Groups of observers were brought in to watch a set up quiz show. Afterwards they were asked to rate in order who were the most intelligent people on stage, and almost invariably they chose the quiz master. This applied even though for each new observer group there was a change of who the quiz master and contestents were and even the arrangements of which contestants were getting the right answers.

Conclusion; after 47 quizzes, we all probably think @Demonstone is much, much smarter than he really is.

No we don't 🤔.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
