2024 Player Reviews: #23 Shane McAdam

Does all of this ‘McAdam to retire’ talk stem from one DL poster who also made some Kossie predictions in the off-season that didn’t eventuate?

Or am I missing something?

I heard it from someone who knows a player agent and I never made any comments about Kozzie.

Someone else also posted it but no idea.

Totally agree SWYL any gain for a player in any skill is great for our benefit.
Hope Fritta kicks over 50goals this year.

You cannot excuse any player for not chasing hard in todays game.
once they cross the white line, it’s on

I am a big fan of Fritta, but 2024 was well below his best

I am sure he knows that himself

That means other players have to carry him when he doesn't chase or tackle. In a systems based environment you can't carry too many players if any.

And then the team ethos comes into play - if he doesn't have to tackle why should I?

A slippery slope. Effort should be non-negotiable.

Agree.

I'm a huge fritter fan. And he has credit in the bank.

But some of his defensive efforts (and on occasion his body language) in the second half of last season were way below par.

Can't have that next season.

And in any case Fritter plays his best footy when he is tackling and applying pressure so there's also self interest.

Trouble is that you are picking out one issue you believe is nonnegotiable. Isn’t kicking goals as a forward the same.

Don’t see you picking out Chin or Spargs if they don’t kick goals because they may tackle more or go some chasing.

I think you just want to have a whipping boy and Fritta is easy prey because he plays a more highly skilled game and you want him to be a beast. He has kicked about 250 goals averaging 1.6/7 per goal per game and gets many if those goals are special ones that no other player gets regularly.

Our forward line would be hopeless without Fritta and tell me how many goals you reckon are lost by Fritta not tabling as hard or chasing as far or ferociously.

Short memories of Bailey being 2nd best on  ground in the GFinal with six goals. And it does matter what mix of players you have in your forward line not all should be clones.

Look for Fritta’s good points.

Effort is 100% non-negotiable. If you can't see that let's choose to disagree

It's a cancer within a team based sport

Not a review of Shano, but giving credit where it’s due…

There’s a group of regular track-watchers who meet up at Gosch’s where we watch from our usual spot at the boundary fence. Yesterday, without warning, one of our group fainted. (Incidentally, If you’re gonna faint in public there’s not many better places than at training: Jacob, the Club doctor, was absolutely wonderful.)

Anyways, just after it happened Shane ran to the boundary. He asked me about it and he was genuinely concerned. He said he hopes she’s ok and that it’s lucky Jacob was there. Then about half an hour later he came over again to get an update and was pleased to hear she was gonna be fine.

This isn’t a testament to his footy prowess but it certainly is to his character.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • GAMEDAY: Gold Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons are back at the MCG and have a massive challenge ahead of them as they take on Premiership contender the Gold Coast Suns. What do you want to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
