I know everyone is getting stuck into Fullarton and I didn't watch the whole game, but would we be better if he played second ruck to allow JVR to only play at full forward? Whilst I think koltyn has to come in, he really didn't have an afl standard game in the 2s on the weekend. The disappointing thing has been at casey all year no one is pushing for recall 1 Quote
Melbournepotter 388 Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 (edited) While I don't think anyone is really pushing for inclusion in the ones, I didnt think Fullartons game was as bad as has been made out. He lead well and kicked well for 2 goals which was how he came to the club, not necessarily as a ruck, but a forward. He couldn't do much worse than Petty up forward and Fullarton is supposedly an actual forward player. Casey put out what appeared to be a very young side and while White tried hard, Coburg appeared much more organised, fitter and certainly faster around stoppages. The Kolt tried and tackled hard all day but wasn't able to impose himself. Jefferson did well I thought and seems to be growing in confidence in himself and ability. He could have had 4 again but a couple of wayward shots (one after a great run and fend off on the boundary) undid some of his work. He needs to get stronger but he appears to be improving. Verall I don't think will be tall enough to take the number one ruck from Max so we really need someone there. The rest were a bit average. Mids were too small and not fast enough to break away from stoppages. A very disappointing result and effort from Casey. Edited June 3, 2024 by Melbournepotter 2 Quote

As I mentioned in this thread... following his one game at AFL level he seems to have plateaued at a VFL level I would best describe as competent but unexciting 1 1 Quote

Have to disagree re Sestan. He's played one good half in the last month of footy and has been wildly inconsistent within games in my view. Tholstrup and yes, even Laurie, have been playing much better footy than he has. 4 1 Quote
Tarax Club 4,189 Posted June 8, 2024 Posted June 8, 2024 (edited) True, but as his ability to run the required repeat distances improves. It should allow him to get to more contests or ahead of contested ball situations. Seen a few glimpses of his tool kit. Kicks a very handy snap goal when the opportunity presents itself. During his performance against Port Melbourne at Frankston. Young Ollie displayed a lovely 'step' around and through opponents at centre bounce contests. Winning the ball and delivering it effectively into the forward zone. Or kicking a mighty barrel goal as he did against the tiggers at Punt Rd. IMO a natural footballer, with a potentially much higher ceiling than others running around at Casey at the moment. With improved fitness you'd expect his consistency to improve too. Agree with this but there's also a 'want' and 'effort' factor here. You can't pick and choose when to go, even at VFL level. That assumes of course that you want to take the next step up! It's those second / third consecutive efforts, one percenters, tackles - pressure and gut running/multiple sprints that may get you noticed.... along with the other aspects you spoke of with ball in hand. While you aren't expecting a massive running machine from Sesto given his HF preference / role, you do need to see him on his bike a little more often and hitting in at the contest a bit more when it's his turn to go. He does do it. He does show it at times don't get me wrong. He's def had some special moments. But he really needs to start turning up the wick IMHO if he's going to make it. If he does, i also agree that his ceiling is potentially much higher than many at Casey. But as the old adage goes, talent will only get you so far in this game. I hope the coaches have pressed this with him and shown him some highlights and maybe a few low lights so that he can see the light and that he isn't that far away, but is also potentially a mile away IF he doesn't get on his bike from here. No one hands you these opportunities at this level, you have to go out and take it. Edited June 8, 2024 by Demon Dynasty 1 Quote
