I like the Hermits Hermits ending there… perhaps segué into his Mersey Beat compatriots, Freddie and the Dreamers with How Do You Do What You Do To Me.

12 bar blues standard format.

I was thinking of it more from a lyrical aspect rather than musical format.

Kate's been working on a home base

It's been more than a year or two

We don't play home finals at Casey

Against the Cats or Roos

I guess patience is a virtue

I got the straight sets red and blues

More than that, most people have us missing the 8 entirely

[censored]. We're still top 4 material easily.

I think it was Gerry and the Pacemakers who sang that one. Freddy’s biggest hit was I’m Telling You Now. As in, I’m telling you now… we won’t go out in straight sets in 2024!

I thought so too until I did a bit of searching, and it seems How Do You Do… was a Freddie and the Dreamers number.

Just checking that (Shows how much time I have on my hands.)

(10 mins later)

i can find multiple references to Gerry and the Pacemakers doing that song. It’s in their singles list, their greatest hits list and on YouTube.

As for Freddie et al and that song… ziltch. Maybe he did a cover version that was released on an obscure LP.

You’re absolutely correct, so please accept my apologies… but I will be having words with my oncologist about the drug regime she currently has me on! 🤣

And for a seamless transition into verse 3 :

Dee girls are red

Dee boys are blue

Along came the finals

And both teams shot through.

You'd be forgiven for thinking it was from the same author poet

"I got the straight set blues

From my head to my shoes

When the forwards fire a shot

It's always there it is not

Those straight set blues

Those straight set blues.

I've got those straight set blues

Those old straight set blues

Well you should see strong men quail

Or just a Maynard fail

Those straight set blues

Those old straight set blues."

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
