For all the mental torture that the likes of Demonstone have inflicted upon me, I've compiled a quiz. In the scale of hardness, I'd rate it a 'talc', but that's because I know the answers.

What do these players have in common:

Backline        Brad Sholl        Noah Balta        Paul Hamilton

Half Back        Daniel Cross        Scott Lucas        Garry Foulds

Centreline        Peter Filandia       Jude Bolton        David Calthorpe

Half Forwards        Mitch Wallis        Joe Daniher        Jake Riccardi

Forward Line        Justin Madden        Matthew Lloyd        Ricky McLean

Followers        Simon Madden        Dane Swan        Tom Liberatore

Bench        Steve O'Dwyer        Leigh Tudor        Ben Ronke        Xavier O'Halloran

Emergencies        Lachlan Sholl        Steve Morris        Rohan Welsh        James Cook

A suspicious number of Essendon names here. Is this a gateway quiz and if I attempt it, I end up swearing on a bible that James Hird was set up by the AFL?

Your initials are MR. Is that you Mark Robinson?

Huh? What? No. No. Just some guy, posting on Demonland.

Blown it Mazer, we all know Robbo can't spell. So if not the Tird who are you? Calico Jack perhaps, or some other fictional pirate.

Edit: So now you can't say Sl obbo!

There's one podium place up for grabs, so here's a clue:

There's some real hard-nuts in this team. But there's also some downhill skiers who may require some assistance.

Congrats to @Mazer Rackham who takes bronze.

The connection for all these players is that they attended St. Bernard's College West Essendon. Some players like James Cook and Daniel Cross came to the school after being recruited by their AFL club.

This quiz has really opened my eyes. I've been researching all things Essendon on the internet. It turns out ASADA and WADA were so jealous of Essendon that they took an ex ASADA employee, Dank, and planted him at Geelong, knowing that one day Essendon would recruit him. (They play the long game, these powerful international banking organisations.) But James was onto them from the very beginning and refused to play their game. He had to sacrifice his own career to save the club, but his love of the club was so great that he didn't even hesitate.

Hang on. Incoming telex from Bruce Francis. brb

'Talc', @mo64? I. Don't. Think. So. Somewhere towards the right hand end of the obscurity spectrum, I'd say!

Thus, a worthy (though, to me, inaccessible) challenge!

(And speaking of obscurity, @Mazer Rackham👏 for your contributions. To your respondents, too.)

Very good Mo, never would have cracked it but a great challenge nonetheless.

All I had for your image clues above was that they all enjoy Honeysuckle scented candles.

St. Bernard of Clairveaux is the patron saint of beekeepers and candles. 😁

Again, very impressive knowledge!

Beekeeper, candles => wax => whacks => thugs => Essendon players => why do Essendon players turn out like they do?

Pretty simple when you break it down.

Speaking of saints, James has learned that the AFL started the Ukraine war to distract from 17 clubs doping their players against their wills. I'll leave you to work out which 17.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

  • PREGAME: Brisbane

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
