The AFL website has listed all the club's leadership groups including ins and outs.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/880565/who-s-in-who-s-out-your-club-s-captains-leadership-group-for-2023

As per usual, only Gawn and Viney are listed for us. Last year in the Gus & Gawny Podcast, there was often reference to our leadership group, although the group was never listed. All I could glean was that Brayshaw and ANB were in it although I assume Lever would be there too. Anyone know what this year's is (or last year's for that matter)? It seems to be a very in-house thing.

Leadership Groups are the biggest waste of time in the modern game.
Max is the Captain (C)

Jack is the Vice Captain (VC)

That is all that is needed.

Leadership groups dilute the role of the Captain, usually from Teams that have bog ordinary players and they cannot decide who should front the Media on a weekly basis.

Remember when we had 2 Captains…

2 careers ruined….

I'm assuming you meant Grimes and Trengove. However, my first thought was Jones and Viney. Until I read your following line.

Apart from the aforementioned, have we ever had any other co-Captains?

I share your view that all you need is a Captain and a Vice-Captain. Other players can be leaders within the club, but don't need to be named as such. Leadership comes from within, not from being given a title. And there's no shame in not being a leader, either.

Absolutely

To name 2 “Babies” as Co Captain’s was showing me that the entire MFC had no Leadership at the time. I feared for the Clubs survival at that time. The last 10 years have shown us how to do it right.
There should be a Statue of Peter Jackson erected next to RDB, without his common sense and experience I doubt we would be here today.
He had the Place functioning correctly within weeks of taking over

That decision alone was fatal, among other things.

I really worried for those 2 Boys at the time. Players 10 years older were under their leadership

Just imagine now, if Jake Bowey had been named Captain

It must never happen again, nor even considered an option

Maxie is big enough as a player and as a character to be a group all on his own.

Jack is there for back up only.

Have a look at the middle row of the team photo. I think that is who is in our leadership group.

I just can't forget that day they were announced. Both of them sitting next to Neald in the photo looking very fresh faced.

Appointing Grimes and Trengove as Co-captains was a terrible decision, but it is not proof that co-captaincy and/or large leaderships groups can't work.  Sydney Swans has had sustained sucess with 2 or 3 captains, an initiative that was begun by Paul Roos 17 years ago.

Fair enough, but i still think it is the exception.
Leadership qualities are part of DNA

(30% Leaders to 70% Followers is the basic number) in Society

A Strong Leader needs to Lead without compromise. Players can always challenge a leader, that is fine. A great leader should expect that, it is a Team game.
To me Multiple leaders causes division and i have always wanted to discuss that with Roosy, to hear his side of the coin

Yes and this is the reason why Essendon's leadership has stunk up the joint so much recently. Too many good blokes you'd rather have a beer with than a robust conversation.

Yes, too many “almost” Leaders can make things worse, different opinions carrying the same weight.
heppell is probably a really nice guy, and i am sure he is doing his best, but i have NEVER seen him lead Essendrug to a close victory.

Both Max and Jack have done that at times, in completely different ways

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
