Whitfield of 2020 is exactly what we need, but he suffered a serious internal injury in '21 that he stated at the time may take 18 months to recover from. This probably explains his drop in form this year and he may well be back to his brilliant best next year.

However, he'd be on big $ and his contract still has 5 years to run! We'd want to be confident of his health before committing to yet another long term contract. He turns 29yo next season.

* Sorry Diamond_Jim, have just seen your similar post. Anyway,  caveat emptor.

4 years since he was last in an AA team, which was his first and only gong. The price is only justified if it's another salary dump!

Would love Whitfield he’s quick and skilful and would complement our other midfielders perfectly. Sadly I can’t see us having anywhere near enough salary cap space for him, I would much prefer him over Grundy but that’s clearly not going to happen.

If its a toss up between one or the other for impact, then I'm taking Grundy - It's a gamble that contains a far higher ceiling. A fit and firing Grundy alternating with Max is just going to re-shape the look of every single match - something that could re-shape the league if it works.

Whereas with Whitfield - he may be a skilful and lightning quick hb/wing that sets up a lot of good ball at his best, but I feel his strengths are far easier negated, and even if he allows others to get more of the ball, or upgrades our ability to link with one another and get better entries, the difference between having him in the club or not will not decide whether we can win the flag or not. He's an outside player that cannot impact on a match if it isn't going his way.

I would say a a functional forward line, upgrading our bottom 6 and the fitness of our stars are the major factor for us contending next year. Add Grundy and it might be the edge that pushes us ahead, Whitfield I just don't think he is that impactful enough.

How about we magically fit both of them in though!!!

Toby not happy according to Tom Browne trade-news-rumours-whispers

It looks like click bait because he says:  “I've checked with sources directly aligned to Greene tonight, there’s no prospect of a trade, there’s no prospect of a trade for Greene this period.  “He’s got four years to run on a deal worth north of a million dollars a year, he’s also the Giants' coveted co-captain.”

Non-story!

Greene is a massive time bomb waiting to go off. Immensely talented but has a fuse so short it’s a risk not worth pursuing.

I think we see things slightly differently about how either Grundy or Whitfield would impact us next year and that’s all good. There’s lots of people on Demonland and more importantly the club that think Grundy and Gawn could be a game changer. I am not convinced but hope I am wrong.

I agree with you about our forward line, fitness and the bottom six players though and yes both players would be great.

And if you bring in Greene, you need to buy the land to make available for the circus that comes with him. We're struggling enough to find land for a training base.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
