We're all excited about another impending finals series, so I've quickly knocked up this little brainteaser (with a difference to my usual theme) to fill in some time before Friday's triumph over the Swans.

It's a team consisting solely of Melbourne players, but only one is currently playing.  You may also notice that some of them are named in other than their usual positions on the ground.  Why is that, I wonder?

This is rather easy, so much so that no prizes could possibly be awarded.

Answers in a PM only thanks, if you reckon you know what I've done here.

B:        Frank Davis     Roger Ellingworth*     Steven May

H/B:   Graham Osborne     David Neitz     Marcus Seecamp

C:        Robert Flower     Andrew Obst     Guy Rigoni

H/F:     Greg Parke     Russell Robertson     Tony Elshaug

F:        'Hassa' Mann     Dean Irving     Simon Eishold

R:        Peter Rohde     David Schwarz     Stan Alves

I/C:     Peter Giles     Frank 'Bluey' Adams     Steven Icke     Stephen Newport

*  I originally had Gerard Healy at full-back but, when I ran the team past Ron Barassi, he scowled and yelled "Healy off, Ellingworth on!".  The swear filter prevents me from posting what he said after that.

Just as I suspected, that didn't take long at all.

Poita and Mazer Rackham have already worked it out.  Why haven't YOU?  :D

Hmmm, still just the two correct responses.

When I devised this simple teaser, I initially thought that many posters would get it straight away.

Who else can capitalise on my much easier than usual poser?

Seems I can only do your easy ones D. Thank you for that.

I pm'd the answer about half an hour ago!

That's odd.  Didn't get your PM, old son.  No reason for it not to come through, either.

I've no doubt you worked it out, as have mo64 and Neil Crompton.

I'll let the teaser run until 8pm and reveal the obvious answer at that point.

For those still pondering, two clues have already been provided.

Here's a third - the players have nothing in common apart from playing for the greatest team in the world.

I initially thought I had it worked out .

Sounds like you have indeed worked it out, Captain Jack.

I imagine you're 100% correct to the letter, in fact.

Because I just arrived home and now about to go out for dinner.

And it isn't Thursday🙁

You'll find it a piece of cake, Luci (the teaser that is, not your dinner).

OP updated to make the solution obvious.

This would be so much easier if I wasn't colour-blind.

I was most surprised to be diagnosed with colour-blindness just recently.

The news came right out of the purple.

As today is Thursday Luci, maybe I can interest you in the following puzzle. I'm no Demonstone so this is similar to D's puzzle, but with a twist.

All MFC players - past and present - but not in their usual positions. Probably for similar reasons as D's. I've even borrowed a few of D's players. I'll laugh if no one gets it!

B:     Glenn Elliott            Jake Lever                  Ken Irving

H/B: Viv Michie               Christian Salem         Ken Emselle

C:     Tom McDonald       Charlie Spargo          Simon Eishold

H/F: Brian Kenneally       Stan Alves                 Oscar McDonald

F:      Simon Eishold         Alex Neal-Bullen       Clayton Oliver

R:      Jack Trengove         Joel Smith                 David Neitz

I:       Andrew Obst            Jake Melksham        Roger Ellingworth          Aaron Davey

Please PM me with your answer.

I've worked it out, but modesty prevents me from posting the solution.  (PM sent)

Nice work Froggy!

Me too. I assume the prize cupboard is still bare.

3 "winners" so far - well done.

But if we are on Demonland then aren't we all winners?

Cant wait for tomorrow night - go Dees!

We're all winners, but some are more winningest than others.

Thank you.  Very thoughtful of you.

It looks like I'm late to the party again.  I've been out all day again so I can't access my laptop.  Why is the laptop significant?  I restrict myself to read DL only on it otherwise I would spend all day here if I used mobile device while out!

Need to go and read the Team thread so will try and have a look at the quiz later.

Thank you to Lucifers Hero for finally making time for the puzzle - and for just now getting it correct. Unfortunately she doesn’t make the top 3, but thoroughly deserves a mention. Demonstone, Mazer Rackham and La Dee-vina Comedia filled the first 3 places.

The answer, I’d suggest, simply reflects part of the reason why we enjoy DL so much.

Thanks.  I'll cheer loudly for you at the game tonight.

And will the 'modest' one out himself in the quiz?

It's a good move restricting yourself to the laptop. Lately I've burned through so much battery being on DL when out.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
