With no likely increase in list sizes rucks are an anachronism.

To have 4 or 5 players on your list for one position out of 35/38 just doesn't work

Suspect most coaches would like to abolish the position.

If the AFL want to keep the dinosaur alive they will need to allow clubs to have "nominated ruckmen" outside the system.

It’s a pity we missed out on that Sudanese ruckman who was tied to us before the AFL changed the rules.

Mac Andrew looked a year or two, at least, off AFL ready in last weekend’s VFL game.
Just wondering if by giving JVR some ruck time last weekend they had some sort of inkling that our two top rucks may be just a bit suspect as the season progresses.

Have a word to Haydn McLean at the Swans.
23yo.  197cms 95kgs
He’s a strong lad and can play Forward or Ruck.  Loves a goal and takes a good mark.   Behind Franklin,Reid &Mcdonald in forward mix and behind Hickey and Ladhams for ruck.  Might be a good offer on a 2-3 year deal.

There is no evidence for most of your comments. Its pure speculation. Most teams have 2 or 3 specialist rucks & 2 or 3 part timers.

Specialist ruckmen will always be part of the game.

Good theory .

Rookie Bell from casey

He was well beaten yesterday for hitouts by the Port ruckman. Around the ground neither was influential.

Finding a tall who can ruck and contribute around the ground is not an easy task

Obviously need a back up ruckman.

Didnt JT say last year 'Sooner or later we will have to draft a ruck'.

Monster key fwd  would be handy as well.

Seems like a prescription for someone who is coming along on our current list  and who is viewed favourably by the PTB.

Yes some comments here about Casey players border on the absurd.

Bell is barely VFL reserves standard (if they had reserves).  Tries hard but clumsy in the extreme, slow & can't mark kick or handball.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
