Play the one practice game or two and leave it as that. 

The set up now is fine imo. When you're playing 3 or 4 games before round 1 you're just risking injuries to key players well before round 1 has even started.

The relevance of the whole pre season cup has died a slow death years ago when Carlton were winning pre season premierships but end up winning the wooden spoon that very same year.

one 'informal' practice game and one 'formal' one is all you need these days 

Honestly wouldn't mind some aflx style weird fun rule set each year
