History of the Melbourne Football Club

It’s posted on YouTube for anyone who didn’t get the DVD. Red and blue: History of the Melbourne football club

I have this and I’ve watched it several times. It’s really good.

Only thing I don’t like is it covers 1987 really well, then skips the 1988 season and just has a brief summary during the 1988 grand final footage. I remember in 1988, making the grand final was a BIG thing. It was so exciting. Ok it turned out to be a disaster, but the lead up to it was awesome. I’ll never forget the feeling.

2000 gets all the attention it deserves with the lead up to the grand final. I’m just wondering why 1988 didn’t get the same treatment? In a way 1988 was more significant as it was our first grand final since 1964. They call the 2000 another “near miss.” To me it was an embarrassing thrashing.

On another note, it does contradict the argument people had on here about the merger night. One person said Ridley did not swear once. He is shown saying “bloody” (a mild swear word, I know, but still argues the point). Also another said he did not raise his voice. He is clearing showing screaming.

Not trying to bring that argument back, but it does show more clearly the other point of view.

Anyway, I highly recommend viewing. It’s highly informative.

There's also some great footage in there from our glory years if I remember correctly. They obviously only have snippets which is why it can't be released elsewhere but it's footage I hadn't seen anywhere else before that.

Thanks for sharing.

I’m always up for a war of words about the merger.  Speaking of which….

The Demon Alternative (Melbourne’s anti-merger group formed in 1996) is planning a 25 year re-union. Anyone who was involved in the group and would like to be kept up to date about the details, please reach out to [email protected]

I’m proud it never happened. Anyone who thought we were “taking over” never saw the St George-Illawarra merger. I could never call out ‘go hawks’ at any match.
I’d take it this long over merging anyday.

Like when Fitzroy fans were expected to be happy when the Bears became the Lions and for retaining the Fitzroy theme song. My brother-in-law was a diehard Fitzroy fan and he found this very patronising.

My great uncle was an old Roys fan and this devastated him. Still loved the game and was happy with the 3 peat to an extent but he was never the same.

We are given choices in life and he missed out on 3 flags and a half decade of excellence because of a stubborn principle.

What footy does  he follow now?

Carlton, but only because my entire family are Carlton including his kids.
And I believe it’s not a choice one makes. Would that we could have the luxury of choosing who/what we love.

And yet we won more finals in 1988 than we did in 1987.

Maybe it’s because he feels like his team was taken away from him? It’s not Fitzroy now it’s the Brisbane Lions. Why would a Melbournian follow an interstate team?
