Melbourne- Tom Sparrow

Melbourne’s first pick of the 2018 draft has had an interrupted start to his career, including a season-ending knee injury in 2019 and a broken collarbone last year. This season, he has featured as the medical sub on multiple occasions. But with full game time on Friday night, the 21-year-old combined 19 disposals with five tackles and a goal.

Yes l think this kid is real quality. One of the best kicks l have seen for someone so young, regularly roosts it on target more than 60m, a real attacking weapon in both the front and back half. Could be a real asset in the business end of the season. Good size too....

Correct me if I'm wrong but when we drafted him I thought the commentators were saying he could have gone in the first round but for his kicking. Either that was wrong or he's really done some work on it. Looks like a gem.

Not unsung at all.  He's a very handy developing player built ready for AFL.

Is he at the level of a Viney yet?  Of course not.  Might he get to that level?  With a few more pre-seasons and experience sure.

Lots of work ahead before he gets there though.  And the AFL machine is a super tough environment.

Enjoying watching his journey so far with some very nice passages of play happening.  Looks very composed around goals already and loves a snag!

My memory might be just cherry picking the good but seems to be a great finisher in front of goals. Seems composed with a nice straight kick.

Sparrow is 0 goals and 6 behinds at Casey this year.

His kicking action is a bit robotic and I’m not sure he’s got a lot of touch on his kicks or much of a left foot.

But what has impressed me is he’s certainly working on lowering his eyes and I think he’s exactly the kind of player that will benefit from Mark Williams.

I said pre game that I question Brisbane mental capacity when it comes to big finals games.

If we can get them on an MCG come September I'll be licking my lips. I question their leaderships ability to take hold of a game and swing it their way when going gets tough.

The only thing that gives me pause is it was Neale’s first game back after a long lay off and they missed Berry who usually troubles us. Along with Neale it’s the younger guys in Andrews, Berry, McCluggage, Bailey, Rayner and Dev Robertson who will eventually lead the team. They remind me of a more talented/experienced version of us in 2017-2018, with Zorko playing the role of Jordan Lewis or Bernie Vince. They’re a long way ahead of their development timeline and they could become a serious team at any stage.

I can recall when we picked up two teenagers as very very early draft picks and they were immediately our best midfielders. Before they'd even showed up for pre season training.

Now this kid finds himself surrounded by and learning from Tracc, Oliver, Max, and others. What an education. How far we have come.

We were missing Langdon and Viney.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
