Im surprised we did not (from what i witnessed at the ground and i might have missed it) start with Kozzie in the middle at the beginning of the match or seemingly at any stage last night.

I think the Swans had us for speed in those center bounces and worried us into playing on the shoulder much of the time instead of being first in more often.

The need for speed and the hunt for ball was lacking imv R&B .  Kozzie also brings an element of closing speed that may have resulted in a few tighter tussles and turnovers in our favour through the middle had he been played there in short bursts.

The above could also be completely wrong ?  Would need to watch the replay to be more certain.

Regardless it's definitely a red flag that needs addressing.  The return of Viney will probably help solve it somewhat.  I just wonder why we suddenly changed our tactics (no Kozzie and apparently playing on the shoulder vs see ball get ball more often) from the winning one previously?  Match ups no doubt come into it but would be interesting to hear the coaches take on this.

I'm sure I saw Kozzie attend a couple of CBA's

Yes he did Adonski.  Faux pas mentioned in my last post ?

Ed the big mover at the top end this week, leapfrogging Tracc into 4th spot for the season so far.

Hunt, Jordan, T-Mac and Rivers also on the move!

Clarry still a fair way out in front with Salem & May holding the next two places, both having been there for a few weeks now.

Maxy losing a little bit of touch with the top five, dropping three places since reaching his highest No.3 ranking in round six.  Of course there are no hit outs to advantage included in his score so one could argue he might be sitting at approx No.3 (and may have been around 2nd/3rd at the end of round 6 also).

Interesting to see Chunk & Spargo both on exactly the same average score.  Crazy stuff.

Rnd 9, 2021 Adelaide Oval - Crows vs Demons

Take a bow Clayton!  Statistically his highest ranked game since compiling these charts (2017) and also the highest of any MFC player during that period.

Let's review this one as i doubt you will see a result on paper like this too often, if ever...

? 28 Effective Disposals running at 73.7% efficiency.  The AFL average is approx 73%.  Highest on the day (just) with next best Laird on 27 running at 77% efficiency.  Not bad either and played a very solid game for the eaters.

? 3 Goals

? 1 contested mark and one mark inside 50.

? 2 x One Percenters

? 13 Clearances (the highest on the field and more than double that of the nearest Crow's player...Laird on 6).

? 3 Rebounds

? 8 inside 50s (Tracc leading overall with 11, best for the Crows Smith with 6).

? 9 Tackles, one of those inside 50.  Equal most on the day with Jordan.  Best of the Crows Laird & Keays with 7 each.

? 11 Score Involvements.  The most on the day with Tracc, Tex & Laird coming in equal 2nd on 8 each.

? 8 Intercepts, the second most on the night.  Lever winning this on the day with a massive 17!  Has to be some sort of record?

? 626 Meters gained.  Third best on the night behind Seedsman 657 and Tracc at No.1 with 731.

? Turnovers 6.  To put that in some context Tracc had 11 (way too many even for a high pressure mid role), Ed 8 and ANB 9.

Our overall team score of 59.0 was a massive 18% off our season average prior to this match and 1% worse than our entire ordinary 2019 season average!

Surprisingly this was not our worst team score however.  That occurred against the Swans with a lowly 55.88

However, our bottom 6 score of 6.78 was our worst for the season, 25% lower than our season average.  What's the old saying, you're only as good as your bottom 6 players?

I'll leave you with one other stat....the Crows had a massive 13 players with under 50 games under their belt tonight.  If my memory serves me correctly, very few teams ever win at AFL level once they have 10 or more rookies (who i consider as players with under 50 games) in their team vs a team with around only 6/7 or less.  Making yesterday's result even more worrying IMV.

Adelaide Games Melbourne
13 Less than 50 7
2 50 to 99 4
1 100 to 149 6
6 150 or more 5

Hope we don't sweep this one under the carpet and review in a big way prior to moving on to the Doggies as there were some significant deficiencies on show tonight vs a bottom four team.  A far chunk of it intensity and above the shoulders from too many in that first half IMV which gave them belief.  Hopefully only a one week aberration.  Plenty of work to do on the track.

Need to fix the zoning off issue when a team gets momentum and too much of the ball.  Tonight reminded me a little of the 2nd round Geelong game in 2019 where we almost played the game in our own back half, allowing the Cats to skip around the back at will and hit targets on the 45 far too often, then make multiple launches deep inside 50.  The Crows stretched us on the switch today and found us out on a number of occasions hitting up loose players with penetrating kicks forward of center, who were then able to launch inside 50.

Also our pressure inside 50 just wasn't near our usual this season with only LJ & T-Mac hitting double figures for tackles inside 50.  Our small and medium forwards... Fritschkreig, Melk, Spargo, Kozzie & ANB laid only three tackles inside 50 between them!

Melk & Fritsch laying zero inside 50 and none anywhere else on the day.  Sorry but that's just not good enough at this level and screams lack of effort without ball in hand.  Both will be very lucky to keep their spots this week IMHO although Fritsch may have a few credits left in the bank vs Melk.

Probably posted elsewhere.  Regardless, very much relevant to this thread.  Effectively a once in a generation game from Clarry.  Astounding stuff.  No wonder he was super [censored] about losing...

Surprised by Langdon’s poor result.  Was far less visible in this game, even if he covered mountains of distance in the game.  Injury late would have had little impact on the score.

oliver is unbelievablely good.

I seriously watched this game through beer goggles Buck so i have no idea what happened re Ed.

Any possibility the Doggies put a run with on him to pressure him off his usual game?  Would need to watch the game again.  Maybe he just had an offy.  Hope he recovers quick.

He's a bloody jet and one of my all time favs now.  Love the way he goes about it.  Not too many in the game run harder than Mr Ed.

My vibe was the wanted to exit via Brayshaw's side, whereby he halved/won many contests.

Just on the notion that Ed runs harder... it's not much more than Brayshaw weekly (about 1km (250m a quarter)...but like Hunt, it's the flowing locks that you eyeball.... though he does get  forward for a snag or 2....

Another record that will surely be hard to beat. Tom Sparrow’s entry onto the field in the last minute of Friday night’s game would have to be the a record in terms of the amount of time a replacement player/sub/emergency has entered the playing arena.

As one example EO ... Lingers is No. 1 in the AFL for sprint averages.

As for goal kicking my understanding is he is our most accurate set shot at the moment.  Or was the last time i looked.

Not too shabby.

You can say that again Jack.  Officially 1% time on ground!  Crazy stuff.  Did we do this just to meet the concussion requirements i wonder or was this just how it panned out on the night?

The Adelaide game really was an outlier as to our defence.

Adelaide scored 96. Not only are they the only side to put 90+ points up against us, they're also the only side to put up 80+ points against us...and also the only side to put up 75+ points against us.

The next highest score we've conceded this year is 73, to both St Kilda and North Melbourne. And then the next two worst scores were 68 to both GWS and Carlton.

Which is funny actually as it shows a trend of sorts: those five highest scores against us were all scored by bottom 10 sides.

Meanwhile the remaining scores, our lowest, are 48 to Richmond, 54 to Hawthorn, 58 to Sydney and Fremantle, 59 to the Dogs and 60 to Geelong.

Maybe highlights a lack of focus against the bottom 10 sides, although given the scores we're conceding are still low (68 and 73, by and large), maybe it's better described as an increased focus against top 8 sides?

Another small shout out for Harmes after Friday night's match (courtesy of Ben Gibson MFC)....

.... "As for Harmes’ performance, well, Liberatore was restricted to a season-low 16 disposals and four clearances, after averaging 27 and 11 respectively in the previous four matches." ...

Tracc blitzed the meters gained count with an impressive 724.  Next best was the Lion's Lyons with 523.  For the Demons Clarry was 2nd with 477 and May just behind with 445.  Shout out to Jordan in 4th place (for the Demons) with 411.  Solid game from the rookie!

Weighted Average Scores up to & including Rnd 12 , 2021 vs 2019

Tracc jumps one place into 2nd.  Been slowly creeping up on Salem in the last few matches with Salem coming back from a brief lay off.

Clarry holding steady and well clear.

Harmes rising two places into the top 5 for the first time this season.  What a bonus it is to have biscuit back to his VG 2019 form where he finished 2nd for the season in these tables.

This makes us even more difficult to counter through the mid field now.  Add to that the form of Jordan and the subtle rise of Sparrow to boot.  Throw in a bit of Chunk on occasions if/when needed and we are starting to bat very deep in this area (touch wood and my block head).

I would roughly place big Max in second here if we were to add something in for his 'effective' ruck work (ie., hit outs to advantage).  My rough estimate on this, and it's purely a guess, would be around 0.500 to 0.700 taking his average score to somewhere around 4.200 to 4.400

Rnd 13, 2021 SCG - Demons vs Magpies

Our worst team score for the season.  Our worst top 6 score for the season.  Our 2nd worst bottom 6 score for the season only bettered in Rnd 10 vs the Crows (just at 6.78).

Salem back to his best is one major positive and Dogga / JJ had pretty decent games.  May went alright.  A few others were serviceable but that was about it.

Forward line was putrid today in the air, on the ground, defensively (lacked pressure/chase downs), accuracy and delivery was bog ordinary also (mostly wide even when we were behind).  I can't recall one player taking a mark on a lead inside 50.  Dogga clunked an over head at one stage early but can't recall if that was inside or just outside. (Note: i missed the entire third quarter so happy to stand corrected).

The Pies did it to us again, just as they did in the last round of 2017.  Only one team gave maximum effort for the entire match today and played as if their lives were on the line while we went wide, Hollywood hand balled or preferred to slow up on the chasing/pressure and instead just guard space.  At the end of the day there is no free lunches at this level and you can never choose when to go or not, even against a bottom 4 club.

Weighted Average Scores up to & including Rnd 13 , 2021 vs 2019

Top 22 average team score is tracking lower than the 2018 season average by 1.7%   Hopefully today wasn't a sign that we still don't cope well when we're expected to win comfortably (above the shoulders!??).  There was virtually zero leadership, structure or cohesion out there all day today and i didn't see much selfless play happening either.  The missed hand ball from Kozzie to Fritsch for a likely goal in the last was one good example.  Need to get back to team first pronto.  And is there any chance anyone could hit up any target inside 50?  I'm not sure who was worse here, the leading forwards (or lack thereof) or those doing the kicking.

Players were trying to do too much.  Happened again and again.  Either the system works, or the superstars do super things.  We look like we didn’t trust the system, and all the superstars were well down.  When have yo seem max, Clarrie and Trac all have such stinkers on the same day?

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
