Using Adelaide as an example.  They develop Lever into one of the best intercept defenders in the competition.  He leaves. 

They develop Doedee as one of the intercept defenders in the competition.  He goes down. 

They develop Keath, who at the moment is one of the best intercept defenders in the competition.

This is something we just can't do.

You mean like Gawn, Harmes Tmac, none of which were high draft picks unlike Lever and Doedee? 

Don't forget Phil Davis. Though this also supports Moonshadow's comment that they have mostly used high draft picks to get these players.

Seems to be something in particular that Adelaide a good at recruiting for/developing, and if there is a particular person responsibly in the coaching staff then we should be throwing sacks of money and love at them to help us make the most of the Lever-May-Hibberd competent interceptor combination. Well, 'combo' might be stretching it since we seem to be averaging less than one on the field at a time!

But, y'know, since our whole defensive gameplan seems to rely on having tall/mid-tall defenders capable of reading the play and being in the right place to slow or repel opposition rebounds, it would be good to a) have them on the park and b) getting the best possible coaching support.

The development of these players has been good, but we still don't do it anywhere near as well as other clubs so we then have to pay a high price for developed players.

You mean like Hawthorn with Omeara, Tom Mitchell, Wingard, Impey, McEvoy and Gunston?

Or like Collingwood with Beams, DeGoey, Adams, Hoskin Elliot and Varcoe?

It's about culture,  'o_d'. 

Gawn or TMc didn't really develop to their abilities,  under the old soft loser culture,  that we've suffered from for a long time... decades.

 

It was the AFL,  thru 'PJ' and 'Roosy',  that turned us about,  and set us up with knowledgeable people off field,  that know the game.

We have had decades of our elected people at board level,  who do not understand footy...  how to build winning AFL footy culture,  into a club.

And how to grow this club.

 

It's been those lost decades of poor leadership that has put us well behind the 8 ball.  It all starts with elected officials...  of which we've been electing people, recommended by Mcc friendly Mfc people...  and we follow their voting recommendations like sheep, of which I remember trusting in their recommendations myself... over the years.

 

This is because we don't know these people 1st hand,  because we do not have a meeting place where we all meet and get to know one another.   The Mcc is a closed off establishment... and this is why we fail to get the correct people elected and in charge of Our footy club.

It's all linked up together the causes of our Ills.   Mostly all come from the same issues.

 

We are playing a perpetual catch-up...  in AFL.    Because we are beholden to the Mcc.

DV excuse my ignorance but why has/is the MCC still having such influence on the make up of the board/club when, from what i undertood, they seemingly cast us out in the mid 80s?  Is it mostly as a result of a large number of MCC members who are supposedly also holding a partial MFC membership (ie; a bit of spillage of MCC coin into the MFC coughers)?
