Thought that Spargo was in no way a lock for the senior team, and even (looks at feet), tipped him to be replaced during the season by a rookie.

Stupid call.

Looking at replays over the off season, and this kid has it. Senior head on young shoulders.

Anyone who gets stuck into Brendon Goddard a quarter into their first game goes alright by my standards.

Actually finding it hard to fathom that he was 18 years old all throughout last season. Never had massive stats but played with the composure of a 200 gamer. Wasn't overawed on the finals stage either.

I think he was no lock as well, but with Hannan and Kolodjashnij more likely missing for rnd 1 he has his spot back. Good little player but he must continue to improve or his spot will be gone.

TEAM:

B: JETTA, MAY, O.MCDONALD

HB: HIBBERD, FROST, SALEM

C : BRAYSHAW, HARMES, FRITSCH

HF: PETRACCA, T.MCDONALD, NEAL-BULLEN

F: MELKSHAM, WEIDEMAN, GAWN

FOLL: PREUSS, OLIVER, VINEY

IC: JONES, LEWIS, VANDENBERG, SPARGO

EMERG: HUNT, J.SMITH, HORE, GARLETT

Nicely balanced team for Rnd 1 - lots of possible yet effective swings within it, like the interchange, love Frosty at CHB, OMac is going to have to feed Frost, Salem and Harmes very well to hold a spot, fwd line looks tremendous.

are there any 2nd year players that don't need to improve? this is surely stating the obvious

can't think of many first year 18yo players who played 18 games (especially at 5'8" and in a difficult position like fwd pocket)

I always worry about publicity with young players especially in their first season, no matter how good it is!

Good article though & a promising first year by any standards. Watched Charlie on the telly in those last couple of games & he seemed to struggle to kick over 30m on a few occasions, but may have been fatique.....but it's something that can be rectified fairly quickly. Mature head on his shoulders & just seems to have the 'footy smarts' which in most cases if difficult to teach & he knows where the goals are.....

If the coaching staff can keep a cool head on his shoulders, he has a very bright future.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
