Demons Game Replays - where to see them

Remember the policy of no TV unless the GF was a sell out.

One year Channel 7 had to buy a swag of tickets so it could show the game.

If you think about it the VFA were the ones who blazed the trail with their FTA live matches every Sunday.

Fascinating to try and predict the future of sports broadcasting.

Ten years ago would we have imagined that Netflix would have the reach that it has today. Perhaps there will be a Netflix that emerges in the Sports market ie.one company..... all the sport you can watch for $20 a month.

That will never happen - one because sports rights cost faaar too much to give away that cheaply (ESPN pays $1b a year JUST for the Monday Night games ie 16 games a year for a billion dollars) and secondly because the Netflix model is based on undercutting their competitors. Once they have cornered the market satisfactorily their prices will increase.

The squeeze continues folks.............

How many people are going to pay for MFC games vs Pies, Bombers, Hawks, WCE, crows etc Those clubs will use that as further ammo to say they should get a larger slice of the revenue pie and the weak-kneed and conflicted Commission and CEO would buckle instantly.

We need to win games at a sustained level

That’s why the clubs you mention are “Big”

I am sick of hearing excuses for the MFC. We were that big (maybe bigger) and now we are spoken of as a small club.

It is entirely our own fault, but it can be reversed, if the players are tough enough mentally

I did like it when AFL/VFL was a only semi profersional back late 80s.  That said, I do think there is truth that other international sports would take the best athletes and take over if the AFL was not able to complete on a player payments basis, which is where a fair portion of the TV rights costs go..  Just look at what has happened to West Indian cricket.

Personally I fork out for Foxtel, but only because I live interstate and can't attend many live games.  Biggest beef I have with Foxtel is that I have to pay for all their other crap channels.  There use to be some half decent stuff on BBC Knowledge and a few other channels, but then they rebundeled it a few years back and I'd have to pay extra for those, so now I get my non footy viewing mainly from ABC iView, SBS onDemand  and YouTube.  Rarely even bother with free to air, except on grand final day.

Speaking of replys and Foxtel, they had some good MFC games from the 90s on reciently on Foxfooty's History Month.

One game Vs Geelong had some interesting moments.  Mark Neld kicking out for Geelong from full back (literally the only kick I saw him get all game).  Garry Ablett kicked 10 or 11 goals from full forward, but we still pulled away and won in the second half, largely due to a sensational game from Glen Lovett, who dominated their star midfield (including Hocking) and kicked 3 goals himself.  If I recall correctly, it also featured a few handy goals from yours truly and a bag from Darren Cuthbertson, in one of the half a dozen games of his career that he was a force.  No Sean Wight in this game and I had to feel sorry for Peter Rode and Steven Febby playing on G.Ablett - Rode to slow, Febby to weak.

The other game I have watched was Vs Collingwood.  Great seasawing close game.  Very late 90s, big Jim's 250th.  Jimmy himself played a great game, comming into his own by running all day and dropping back in defense in the second half starting many rebounding efforts.  Other notable players efforts that day included Hopgood, S. Febby, Todd Viney playing at half forward and Brent Grgic who kicked a nice bag and provided a good target when moved into attack.  Poor Jeff Farmer did a hammy in the first or second quarter, Swartz and Jeff Wight were bloody hopeless and couldn't get near the ball, let alone mark it.  Anthony Ingerson and Jammie Shannohan battered manfully against the Rocca brothers, limiting the to just a few goals.  The real star of the show for me though was Joel's dad, Shaun Smith, who sat the whole first quarter and a bit on the bench, but then came on and kicked five goals for the afternoon.  Most people will always remember Shaun for his high marking and 'that grab' he took on Garry Lyon's head, but this game exemplified his all round courageousness and the absolute dead eye dick he was from a set shot.  The MFC ended up winning the game by less than a goal I think in the end.

Great reliving those days.

That's great - in the meantime it would be ideal if we didn't try and support strategies that would harm the club financially.

That Collingwood game was 98, cats game must've been 91 if Cuthbertson was playing?

Yes but in the meantime the big clubs are pulling 70k-80k members and are aiming at 90k (Richmond). We only recently beat the 40k mark and have an ageing supporter profile. Selling off the media rights club by club would be disastrous for us.

Interesting that 98 was his last year with MFC. I always thought ND unloaded him too early. Here he is kicking 5 and I am also sure that he played a few blinders down back that year due to our injury list. I am sure I remember him playing full back on Gary Ablett and giving him a bath? I do remember watching him playing down back and noting that he was a natural, could read the plY, clean hands, great athleticism when required. Think J Howe, S Wight. For some reason Daniher couldn’t see his real value.

You have to jump and swim mate

stop making excuses. We win games the rest grows

i want the MFC to have their own Media

The AFL Greed is starting to kill the crowds, slowly i agree, but per capita compared to 40-45 years ago figures are down

You talking about Cuthbertson? I think his last year was 93 or 94 definitely gone before Daniher arrived in 98.

‘91 was when he had those big games...

Yep back to back against North and the Pies (on ANZAC Day no less!) 7 goals a piece, part of the reason Jakovich was kept out of the side til later in the year.

The Geelong game referred to above was 93 tho, I was shocked when I checked thought he was gone by then.

To make us a power again you'd need at least 2 decades of sustained success.

The tbox was a great system and easy to use

Now on foxtel, poor quality, definition and complicated aceess and search

Why are we lumbered with this 2 bit old school technology Ohh and btw  never seen so much crap trotted out as entertainment on the othe foxtel channels

At last count tbere were 647000 t box customers to be forced over to Foxtel

They are hell bent on extracting every last cent out of a moribund and outdated business model
