A Day at the Races

Yep no problem. I was thinking more about getting a bit of banter happening on a Saturday, seeing as how a few people are posting now. A group bet is a good thing to organize for that.

I replied to this post in the post above Wadda but the post didn't quote--up (so to speak)

But as for the exotic 6(?) pick should we just include Behemoth as the first choice so we can all pick something else.

Solved the problem of finding the 6th participant as well.

1 minute ago, Wadda We Sing said:

My only thing with that is there are normally 3 or 4 emergencies in these types of races and usually a few scratchings so probably doesnt get finalized till Sat morning anyway if long shots are selected for places.

If you want to run with 3/7/7/7 for example or 1/9/9/9 then ppl might need to nominate more than 1 horse.

6 picks and then people can do whatever they like with them ... allows everyone to have their own flexibility.

So we just list the 6 picks once the 6 are in.  Any scratchings and again,  allow each individual to adjust on their own terms

Keep it as simple as possible.

Otherwise,  it's too cumbersome and high maintenance.

Behemoth as the standard bearer (?) So we then only need 5 others.  We'll probably be done by Friday is my guess.

I might go 3/7/7/7 but adding my own choice to the 6 (but not publicly)

Yes, but thats what i mean....if the person who picked the scratching is not around on Saturday morning or doesnt notice, then they cant select a replacement within a reasonable amount of time. Its never straightforward a we know.

In that case you can either make the 1st emergency replacement horse their pick instead/try and notify the person concerned to make another selection or make a decision with the punters who are around that morning/early arvo.

Im happy to go with one out for a first go....might be easier.

So you want 1 out + six selections (1 selection each)?

If it goes from 6 nominated to 5 because of a Saturday scratching I don't believe we should be too fussed.  Make it low maintenance

Individuals can add their own private choice or choices from the 5 left over if there's a Saturday scratching.

If the scratching happens Friday or earlier the person gets another go if they are alerted and aware.

Otherwise the thing becomes too cumbersome with too much moderation for any individual (and it won't be me as I work Saturdays)

Any earlier scratching can be worked the same way we work the best bets.

By the way,  with the best bets,  I don't view the choices as a 5 or 6 pick multi as first port of call.  Others can but that's their choice.

I'd much rather single bets,  a double or 2 and maybe a treble.  I'll still have a coffee on the bigger multi but with zero expectations.

@Wadda We Sing ... executive decision time.

If you're going to be around on Saturday and we get a late scratching,  just add one yourself.  But you're going to have to do it early as people here won't want to hang around or wait too long.  I barely get 5 minutes to scratch myself on a Saturday so I don't want to be checking in here too much.  Not everyone is idle during Covid-19.  Half I know are flat out like I am.  The other half are bored witless.

Or just leave it at 5 choices (if we had 6 nominated) ... I'll leave it up to you.  We can worry about rotating the sub choice later on but from a personal point of view,  it won't bother me at all if there are only 5 choices ... I'll just add 1 or 2 myself.

@Wadda We Sing  @Dee Zephyr  @JV7  @Biffin  @rolling fog  @Gorgoroth

The Team Exotic (for want of a better term)

  • The choices (6) can be used for your favourite type of exotic bet (Quinella, Exacta, Trifecta, First4)
  • A total of 6 nominated horses only in a chosen event (so get in early) n.b. One choice each only
  • If your choice gets scratched you get another choice (once alerted)
  • All choices will be collated at the end of the week for your perusal (Friday or Saturday)
  • Nominate 1 horse only - it's not multi choice.  No pre-empting please.
  • If possible,  nominate your choice along with your best bet (in the same post)
  • Remember,  it's all about the team!

This week's nominated race is the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes so good luck!

Executive decision - unless anyone has any objections,  we can include 'Behemoth' as the default 1st pick.  That way, everyone else can look for some value.  So we're really only looking for 5 more choices.

And I don't mind in the least if I miss out first time up ... so go to it ladies and gentlemen.  First in,  best dressed.  I'll make a choice on Friday if all the slots aren't filled by then.

Best Bet Saturday

Caulfield Race 6 No.6 Agreeable $5(W)

Number 4 Cascadian as the exotic pick.

Some nice value there fella's

I've already worked out a few doubles and a treble as well as using 1 or 2 picks as place options (in small multi's)

The big multi only has to cost the price of a coffee but there is always value within all the picks.

And there's still a couple/few best bets to come in.

This is the bounce-back weekend, I know it ?

And we have 3 choices already for the 6 pick exotic (Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes)

And we now have 5 choices for the 6 pick exotic (Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes)

#1 Behemoth (Default Pick)

#4 Cascadian (DZ)

#11 Age of Chivalry (Gorg)

#6 Dollar for Dollar (JV)

#13 Pretty Brazen (Wadda)

If there aren't any more takers by 6pm tomorrow I'll post up a choice.

But I like all the choices so far anyway ... My first 3 choices have been taken up but in such a wide open betting race,  there's a few others to choose from

So we should have it all finalised by tomorrow evening.  Putting a bet on is optional of course and up to the individual in any way they prefer.

I'm tossing up between a Tri & F4 but I might split my outlay and have 2 smaller bets on either exotic.

And a small percentage can still deliver a very decent dividend.

Thanks in advance for participating.

So we"ve got our 6 choices for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.  If there's a scratching in the morning Wadda can post up the sub choice.

And we can all get our chance to post up the possible sub (in rotation) but you've got to be available to do so on a Saturday morning

Might be best to hold off on having a bet in the race post the morning scratchings.  Just a thought.

But let's hope we can get a collect first time up.  All our choices have been winning or running on well in good company so we're definitely in with a chance.

Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 1400m Group1 $500k

#1 Behemoth (Default Pick) 7-2

#4 Cascadian (DZ) 12-1

#5 Superstorm (Macca) 9-1

#6 Dollar for Dollar (JV) 25-1

#11 Age of Chivalry (Gorg) 9-1

#13 Pretty Brazen (Wadda) 15-1

Don't mozz things Gorg!!!  Don't you know the golden rules of punting (unwritten) ?

Shoosh!

Let's face it,  there's a heap of chances but you can't have them all.

But I know this,  if we do land a Tri or F4 with these picks (in the right combo) the dividend will be healthy.  Esp if Behemoth is run out of the finish.

But the big boy is the horse to beat.  It's drawn well and Williams shouldn't have too much trouble getting the horse out in a (probable) truly run race.

The topweight at 60kgs but the lightweight horses are carrying 54kgs (instead of 52kgs)

As always,  you need a bit of luck.

Yeah I know, my bad...

Might drop $10 on that 6 for a f4, if it gets up 3% should be a healthy return especially if as you said behemoth is the fourth or not in it at all.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
