Could someone please expand on the salary cap rules if you pay out a players contract on the basis of career ending injuries.

You will recall that Lamumba was placed on the long term injury list with only 2 or 3 rounds to go. This required special approval from the AFL under the rules. It was presumably done for a purpose and I don't think it was the usual purpose of allowing a rookie upgrade.

I think if a player retires as a result of an injury, sustained from footy,he can be paid out up to half of his salary and there are salary cap benefits to that payment, despite the obvious saving.

There was talk about something to do with all that being the reason he was put on the LTI at the end of the year.

Thanks Redleg.... much appreciated

for a workplace sustained injury "half your salary for the next 2-3 years " is not a whiz bang pay out. I appreciate AFL is not your normal workplace but it just seems light.

It does have the benefit that a player who is contracted would not easily accept an allegation by the club that they have a career ending injury and thus minimises the chance of rorting.

I may as well put this , I had a good chat to H at training, there was a concern with his concussion, he was in the hands of neurologists etc, the decision was to stop everything, give him an extended break so to speak.

The prognosis going forward is good, he was feeling a whole lot better with everything when I spoke to him

Just wants to be ready day 1 pre season and take it from there

Glad to hear if this is the case and hopefully he comes back stronger and keen.

I think H is one of those 'cherry on top' players. Will look better as we do and adds a very important ingredient in leg speed.

I would still find a spot on a back flank if he gets back to his best so not issues in holding him whilst contracted even though he's clearly a different cat.

Hopefully this would see Hunt unleashed on a wing also

My list of changes at the end of the year (delisted, traded or otherwise):

  • Dawes
  • Grimes
  • Lumumba
  • Terlich
  • Newton
  • Max King
  • Michie
  • ANB
  • Dunn or Garland
  • Matt Jones

Any of them contracted?

After the Casey match we can say goodbye to Spencer(5th),Michie(zilch),Trengove(4th),Grimes(5th),M.Jones(zilch),Newton(zilch),Terlich(zilch),Dunn(4th) and Garland (4th). In brackets is the draft pick we could command ( more like pray for) ANB and Kennedy Harris may survive,we need someone to get rid of for next year.

I still would hang on to Max King for another year, though most wouldn't, but hard to argue the rest.

Unfortunately I think JT is also finished.

I think Kennedy is not much either.

I would rather back Taylor in the draft and trading in a couple of players with pace and skill. Something the above group don't have.

Trengove gets another chance because he just signed a contract and I can't see anyone else wanting him.  The reality is he was found out to be too slow in 2011, but he deserves another chance for all he's been through.

I'd have no issue with trying to offload Kennedy.

Give ANB another pre season and see if he comes on. I don't think it's wise to get rid of a 2 year player who has consistently dominated VFL games.

Need to bear in mind that it's players like ANB that place the most pressure on the firsts to perform week in, week out.

ANB looked classy at times last year, this year he's looked unskillful and messy.

Hard to argue with

the only one that I see a glimmer of hope for is Dunn but only if you can put a fast player near him to take the ball and get it moving when Dunn gets the ball

His VFL play reminds me of a dinosaur but he does get the ball.

I wouldn't be upset if he stayed but I think we only need one of him or Garland and Dunn has more currency, therefore we might jag a fourth round pick for him.

Did you get to a lot of Casey games? Or are you basing it off a couple of AFL showings?

I think I'm with you here, CB. I think had Trengove not been a co-captain and come back from such an injury, he would have been gone too. JKH is probably near that list too.

However, I don't think we'll get rid of that many, simply because it means we have to replace them and it's not like we're flush for picks. Dawes, Lumumba, Garland and Dunn are all pretty experienced players too, which would mean replacing them with experience.

I feel bad for Dunn and Garland. I know they provide solid depth but I would like to see their careers continue at other clubs, regardless of what we get for them.

I rate JKH, needs a good run with injury but that may never come.

He would have helped a lot if fit today.

Melbourne and Casey games.

I rated him highly last year, despite big numbers in the VFL has just looked off the boil this year.

The guy was drafted in the 40's and has shown glimpses of AFL level footy.

If the club starts churning through draftees at a rate of 2 years then you're out, I'd be pretty concerned.

I'm more concerned about holding on to players for too long.

So you're saying that two years is too long?

There' so many examples in of late draft picks taking a couple of years to find their feet at AFL level. Dane Swan is a classic and probably a suitable comparison to ANB.

ANB is not deadwood.

    TRAINING: Monday 20th January 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
