Why?

Every year we have the best 3-5 18 year olds and we are told that these are the best and to pick anyone else is a reach.

And every year, the best player(s) come from outside those players and from the following half a dozen picks.

I don't like the way the 'consensus' ruins this club's drafting.

The consensus on the 'consensus' should be that it is almost always wrong.

Yes yes and yes.

I argued with all and sundry that Toumpas was the obvious choice over Wines for that exact reason.

I will argue that the expert consensus was Toumpas was always a higher rated draft pick than Wines. Therefore on all expert consensus we did not select incorrectly.

However - the expert opinions are almost always wrong.

rebound drafting

Have you (or anyone else) seen the movie Draft Day.

It's a horrible NFL sponsored movie that came out recently where a GM trades for the top pick giving up a ransom of picks, then take the player he would've at pick 10ish anyway, then somehow (through complete BS) manipulates the draft to get back to exactly where he would've been anyway plus an extra pick for a running back to make the coach happy.

Either way it's similar to your theory!

I like your plan, but why stop there. My plan is grab Petracca and Brayshaw, both showing a heap in their first year and turning us in to a destination club as players see the opportunities that Jones, Tyson, Viney, Petracca and Brayshaw could bring. All of a sudden we sign Will Hoskin-Elliott who becomes the next Nat Fyfe and he doesn't even have to put his skinny frame in the guts. Instead he plays wing and half forward. Oh Dangerfield jumps on as well. Then in Dangerfield, WHE and Petracca we have 3 unstoppable forwards/midfielders who rotate at will. All Dawes and Hogan have to do is create space, chase, tackle and bring the ball to ground. Garlett, Kent and JKH are sniffing around the forward line as well. Oh and Bernie Vince and Salem become AA rebounding defenders and Jeremy Howe is the ultimate utility who kicks 50 goals whilst playing half his time on a wing and a spare defender. Gawny gets injured in the prelim and Jake Spencer kicks the winning goal of the grand final on the run from 50 out on the boundary.

theres many ways it can be played out, but I've got a feeling that the big fella Petracca will take a little while to develop a tank. an engine? let him go for 2 yrs, & then get him back on the rebound, when he's homesick. the opposite of $ulky who had a tank but not much else.

Take Brayshaw & Lever. Lever the swingman utility, & turn him into a goddard type. then next 2015 trade period, get one of shiel/treloar/Kennedy, etc.

Then in the 2016 trade period, buy Petracca back for some sort of trade...

If we left Petracca to GWS at pick 4 [by taking Lever] then we would want to first have a firm understanding next year that they will facilitate us getting one of their top homesick mids in preference to any other aspirants. No way I would be taking Lever over Petracca unless we have this undertaking first.

That wasn't thinking outside the box.

That was selecting a kid who wasn't well-equipped to cope at the next level simply because the consensus said he was an AA U/18 CHF, and selecting a coach because he'd been part of successful clubs and coached successful players, and consensus was that these were key indicators of a future quality coach, when in fact his communication skills and an ability to build a good culture, rather than operate within an existing one, were more important in today's game.

the problem was they were outside the box = damaged goods, & there just wasn't due thinking at all; nor intelligence applied.

Just a technicality - after reviewing Mark Jackson and his handstand I believe it points to the sky.

I see no aggression and little pack marking with Wright. More a bloody big kid who moves pretty well who therefore takes some marks. His kicking is very good though.

Would love to know how you think he'll kick 100 goals though considering he doesn't trouble the scorers all that regularly in junior footy. But if he can kick 50 that's nothing to laugh about.

Don't know if I was watching the right highlights but it looked like Wright's maximum distance was just on 50. I certainly cidnt see any set shots from outside 50
