The Second Ruck

I see our ruck situation as one of the more pressing issues we need to look at (not that it's the only one though).

Pedersen needs to play defence, he's so much better down there. But we appear to feel hamstrung in that regard as we need him as the second ruck, which means we have to play him forward.

What can we do to fix this? Can we carry two of Spencer, Jamar and Gawn in the side? Is this where we need Fitzpatrick to develop?

IMO, we cannot risk Hogan in the ruck, ever, and Dawes showed at Collingwood that he's no good as a ruckman. I don't think we can go long term with two of Spencer, Gawn and Jamar in the side, but we may have to, as I also don't think we can go with Pedersen as a forward-second ruck.

Pedersen absolutely has to go back - it is where his best AFL form is and he killed it last year down back in the VFL.

Think we just have to suck up either Fitzpatrick being a very average back up ruck or Gawn being a very average forward.

Jamar is gone and not the answer to either.

Carry Gawn if he's in form then we are top heavy but so be it. Although Jamar and Gawn is preferable to Spencer and Gawn. Fitzy if he gets back in form. Pedersen if needs be. We can win games with any of the above combinations.

I think I feel the same - we either have to commit to Fitzpatrick or Gawn and play one of them. I think that's a better outcome for the team than Pedersen (I mean, I'd rather see if Fitzpatrick can make something as a forward than play Pedersen there, who we already know is not good enough).

This is where the loss of Clark hurts again, he was the logical 2nd ruck and Roos planned to play him there. Fitz is not strong enough in the position and at the moment also not good enough to hold a forward post.

The off season will see us looking for a developed ruckman struggling for a consistent game. Looking West would be my bet.

Yep, another in the list of many reasons why Clark was so important to us.

You thinking Sinclair? Lycett?

Ty Vickery

No thanks.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.

It's Game Day and there are only 5 games to go. Can the Demons find some consistency and form as they stagger towards the finish line of another uninspiring season?
