Tom Rockliff

I think it's all a ruse.

Rockliff is going nowhere and has no inclination to.

If Rockliff wanted out, then they'd deal for pick 2.

Getting a club, such as the Lions, to accept a deal for a player, such as Rockliff, is only half of the battle.

You have to convince the player to join your club. Getting someone to come to Melbourne might still not be all that easy, even with the attraction of Paul Roos.

Good players wish to change clubs because they believe they have a better chance of playing in finals or because they are paid substantially more than they are now getting.

The latter argument is the only one we can currently offer and we have to pay 'overs' to get anyone. Clark and Dawes are two such examples.

Unfortunately this leaves us the less palatable option of 'recruiting' players who have reached their 'past best use date' or those who are unlikely to make it, given their lack of development at other clubs. Rodan, Burns, Gillies and Pederson did not give us a lot of good games this season that would suggest that this type of recruiting is the way to go.

It means nothing, but it probably demonstrates enough... that if you look at Tom Rockliff's twitter account he was wishing Leppitsch happy birthday 14 hours ago.

Not the sort of behaviour I'd expect from a player planning his escape.

Give up guys, someone was spreading a deliciously enticing rumour.

I'll be happy with Aish anyway.

But it's true... the late night flight to Brisbane, the dark sunglasses, the big red folder with "Black ops Rockcliff - top secret" on it...

If we cannot trade 2 for a deal involving a seriously good player, I'd be happy with Aish as well.

From all accounts Aish is one of the standouts of the draft this year.

It would be hard to criticise MFC if we do draft him. Surely it's time that we (a) got a top selection right; (b) had success with developing the draftees 'potential' and © managed to keep him on our list for a lengthy period.

But then my mind springs back to this period in other years.

Who would be the last 'early' selection we had that met the criteria above? Travis Johnstone would be my guess, though he was also maligned on a regular basis.

Theres not much point going for Aish...he will pack his bags for Adelaide as soon as his contract expires if we recuited him I reckon...The Crows are all over him....And we dont need another outside skinny runner....We already have Toumpa..

Crows were all over Trengove. And Toumpas.

WA teams are all over Hogan.

Why bother drafting anyone?

We should just give up...

FFS.

OMG! You left 'Invincible Whites' off your signature!

Thanks for the rumour by the way. Good stuff.

Before we get too excited, the same poster said to expect Jolly to be announced on a 4 year deal...

It's a fair question to ask, considering...

Would you prefer I wee on your leg & tell you it's raining, dazzler?

Get off the forum you troll

"Along side Carlton aiming to take free agent Dale Thomas they are also preparing to launch a $600k a year (over) five year deal to Tom Rockliff."

This was just posted by the AFL trade rumours, draft and offseason news site on Facebook.

Wouldn't say its anymore than a rumour at the moment but I hate to see him end up Carlton knowing we had a chance to get him.

Throw the sink at him!

Rockliff manager was on SEN this morning. He asked not to be asked about Rockliff??

Andy Maher did ask and he gave the line that hes vice capt and contracted and wouldnt think he would be going anywhere.

Question is why would he request not to be asked about him?? The conspiracy theorist in me would think there something going on and he didnt want to make a comment to not lie or giving the wrong information out???????

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
