Last year, the biggest game of the year was only in standard Def.

every other game was in HD (albeit on foxtel).

same again this year.

I realise its a little petty whine, but PUT IT ON HD ON YOUR HD CHANNEL, 7!

poor.

Costs more and they have a large captive audience in the majority who are not Foxtel subscribers.

Why bother!

Advertisers are not prepared to pay the higher $$$.

Ch7 make more $$$ putting it on at the SD rate.

Blame the AFL for being too greedy. Not Ch7 (this time)

Since when did a TV channel think about "doing the right thing"

It is about money front , centre and back.

well 7 days ago they did the right thing

they could have asked the weapon about lots of things but kept the questions of the show and let Essendon breath a little easier

Does it really WYL... I imagined it would have been done with the same cameras & cabling, etc???

what is the difference in the hardware etc, needed for HD Footy?

My view is the right think was to go for the juggular

But they took the approach that would best protect their investment.

HD cameras for starters

Lots DL. The picture size of HD is about 50% larger that equates to a bucket load of information.

HD Looks good because it aint cheap. But why show it inHD when the ratings will be the same anyway?

Apart from the picture not being transmitted in HD (as it is on Fox and believe me there is a marked difference) The Audio is only broadcast in glorified Stereo and NOT in Digital 5.1 Surround as is Discovery, Soho, Fox 8 and many others on Foxtel... But alas, the Foxtel channels do not transmit their Sports /Footy channel in Digital Audio... Not sure why not..

I don't think the equipment these days is so much the issue

I think a big part of the problem is transmission bandwidth

Until the analog channels are fully decommissioned the stations have a limited bandwidth for DTV which they have to divide into multiple channels

More channels per station = less bandwidth per channel

less bandwidth = lower quality broadcast (ie lower definition)

stations mitigate this problem by using compression algorithms, however the more compression the more problems with quality so it is a balancing act

fta stations have basically decided to have more channels but lower definition

when they get back the analog bandwidth and the technology costs keep declining this could all change

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
