Watts Is Better Than Hurley

Featured Replies

Quarterback or point guard, for all their limitations, are better descriptions than the anachronistic Centre-Half-Back. The reason people use these descriptions is because the traditional AFL positions are woefully inadequate. Listen to Mick Malthouse - he has a whole range of new role descriptions - the sooner these get into the common vernacular and replace quarterback, point-guard and back-pocket the better.

Sorry you feel that way DG, obviously Daisycutter and Old Dee don't believe I wasted cyberspace. But brace yourself, because if I don't agree with something written, I will continue to "waste cyberspace" on this forum.

Maybe they can PM you ?

billy, stop acting like a fascist dictator. Who cares how other people refer to the rebounding defender's role? The quarterback is a good analogy and it shouldn't matter if it originates from an evil American code or Aussie rules. People can say whatever they want. Stop wasting cyberspace.

Rubbish Dave.

A quarter-back (or point guard) has no equivalent in AFL - totally different roles with no comparability

What next? A tight head? lol

Good half-backs with leadership qualities will play a large role in dictating the play in front of them. They direct teammates, decide which wing to head down, whether to switch, etc. That's pretty similar to a quarterback.

Robbie Flower was a wonderful wide-receiver in retrospect and Sean Wight such a reliable linebacker.

Irony.

The next logical thing is to determine who our tight ends and linebackers are I suppose. All this terminology related to completely unrelated sports is a yawn. I still await the prospect of seeing our supposed quarterbacks hands fiddling around behind big fat arses though. The QB's hands seem to spend most game time there in that other so called version of football.

old55 said it best. The game has changed and people have different roles to what was once the norm.

You need to embrace modern footy terminology and tactics to understand anything that happens these days. The 'king it long' brigade, the people that collectively sigh and moan when one of our players kicks backwards and people that think that the positions today are the same as in the glorious 80s have NFI. You need to adapt or the game will pass you by.

Still nothing wrong with kick long to a contest or a two on one .The game is still about kicking a pigskin through the goal the most times. Why F!ck around going backwards and sideways when everyone floods back? Dont believe everything you read about stats and plans and all that.

The essence of it is hard contested football .

Are you the real Ray Biffen? (that would be lovely post internet age irony). If so please post a recent photo

Ray Biffin spells his name these days Biffen ?

Good to see this topic has decended into some quality discussion also.

Thought this was about Watts and Hurley. Didn't realise it was also about gridiron, basketball, poster insults and some fragile keyboard warriors.

Whether it is Watts v Hurley or Nic Nat or Tyrone Vickery or Tom Lynch. The point stands that we are all (or at least 90%) very happy with getting young Jack and hope that he continues the improvement and develop into the weapon we are all hoping for.

He could if he was trying to be really post modern

Does our team need a Quarterback, or a Point Guard? We play Aussie Rules football, there are no such positions on the ground. It's either back pocket, full back, half back flank, chentre half back, etc, etc.

Our game is unique, let's keep it that way.

Nobody is saying he does or has to play that role in footy.

But it would come naturally to him because he has played it with some success in basketball for many years.

This reminds of this scene from Seinfield.

Very good. A three pointer?

Gatekeeper?

Funny you should say that the dufus commentary team on 7 called Fletcher a goal keeper on a few occasions (amongst a million variations of the terms sweeper)

Nothing but net from 'downtown'.

After a bullet pass from the point guard playing the role of the sweeping quarter back court general

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
