GWS 17YO Draft this year

Featured Replies

Has anybody heard any names that will be going into this draft?

Wonder if they made a "small" mistake last year with the 2/2 strategy.

Seriously who is going to give up a first round pick in the draft for a 17YO if you can get a top quality 18YO for it?

GWS might marginally struggle this year to get "fair" value.

Just a thought.

Jack Martin from WA is the likely #1 at the moment. Comes from a similar area to O'Meara.

What do you think he is worth?

according to your 'theory' no more than anyone in the draft

its all in the development $$$$$$$$$s circa 2012

Geez so they are looking down the barrel of having to deal with Collingwood, West Coast, Carlton etc - why would they pay top draft picks for a young kid that will do nothing for their premiership window.

ahhhh well poor GWS pity there wasn't a club that was going thru a "rebuild" they could get interested, that had some quality draft picks that they could at least start too negotiate with - such is life.

Obviously you have never been to war...

But if he has he can PM me and talk about it.

Obviously you have never been to war...

no, not literally anyway.......only cyber keyboard wars.......much safer

Thanks guys when I need you I will call - have no fear. (you are a great help at times)

but - It breaks my heart that GWS might struggle to find that negotiations partner - ahhhhh well such is life.

Back to discussing other issues.

Hey wait a minute.....I have so played football......there

Yeah I wonder if we would ever consider opening the lines of negotiations with GWS?

Its all in the time-lines.

Where we are at the moment I would definitely not be looking at getting a 17yo this year. Last year was fair enough to have a crack but we need kids who can come in to the team ASAP and start getting some competitiveness out on the field. To get a 17yo this year we would basically have to give up pick 4 and who is to say there would be much difference between pick 4 this year and pick1/2 next year especially when a 17yo kid's value can change dramatically over the course of a year. Where was Watts rated in 2007? I can't really see any bidding for these this year unless they want to trade a decent player to GWS because most of the teams with the picks GWS would want will not see it as worth trading it away.

Hmmn, what does GWS need???

I might mess this up but isn't it said that we can't use the compo picks on viney? In saying that would it be considered a fair trade to trade our first pick (say 3) for the 17 y.o, if they are truely considered a top pick, then use the compensation picks on whoever is best available. Would this mean that assuming what I mentioned about viney only being taken with picks that are not the scully picks take viney at 22ish. Just pondering our options

In 2012 I suggest they "might" head down the similar path to GC17 in their second draft if possible - aim for quality draft picks over quantity. Which is quite counter intuitive in a "deep" draft year. But they need to find a partner to off load 1 or 2 of the remaining 17YO's otherwise they are wasted. I'm suggesting they might struggle - Who TF is going to give up a quality 18yo in a STRONG draft for a 17yo in the next draft.

Only someone where you could create a WIN-Win deal. Its all in the Timelines.

I'd suggest that some of the 1Yr, 'Older Options' they took last year, will be nearly times up, & they may look to a 29 Yr old Big Body to help lead for the next 3 years.

Nice option, as long as GCSuns are up the ladder. chasing the Doggies tails.

Giles goes pretty good - but I cant see them committing draft picks for a player they can pick up as a free agent.

I didn't know our ruck was in Dispute with Us.

He hasn't signed yet - which is always a minor concern. However, GWS will be looking for quality picks or freebies.

i Think Geelong might look at getting one of the 2, in order to pre prepare for their rebuild, but i guess they wont have to much to offer.

The jungle drums are definitely beginning to beat - all be it very quietly. Dont think Geelong will be a threat

When two "tribes" go to war combine that with The "Cloke" article today its a "flush out" article for sure.

I think we''re more than serviceable in the ruck dept' atmo. I still think Spencer will progress as I thought Jamar would.

We have Gawn who is quite a good young ruck & they'll need game time to grow.

IMO we could go after a bottom ager, late in the draft or in the rookie draft.

We need to draft, to continue to sift through for running classy H/B Flankers & Strong bodied mids + class mids, IMO.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
