Picks: 2,3, 9, plus two picks in the mid 20s

I heard Viney has a terrible attitude, struggles against taller opponents, his groins are wrecked and his style of play will see him spend most of his career suspended.

Not worth a 3rd round pick.

hehehehehe - I heard he allegedly got in a fight last weekend in a pub, was kicked out for under-age drinking, I'd be concerned the bouncers gave him an absolute belting, he is either soft or the head injuries he incurred could be career ending. B) (that might get past a few Mr Darling)

3rd round pick is generous, also has daddy issues, spoke to his old coach who tried to teach him to play in a team structure but wouldn't listen to anyone but todd who said the coach knew nothing and to just get the ball and get as many possessions as possible to make him look good, always kick to a sideways or backwards target to up his eff rate to make himself look good. bad attitude.

It would be good though, if we could engineer a decent consistent rumour that would create a bit of doubt in the minds of other teams, making it too risky to bid high.

You would never seriously recruit a player that refused to speak with you - you might posture - but when push came to shove you would never do it.

You underestimate the power of the player. We all new where he wanted to go - it was just a matter if you could leverage the situation - which no club was able to do - North came closest by attempting to broker a deal.

then why even bother to have a draft. $$$ lever the system Doc. You know that. At the time we were paying unders on the salary cap.

We should have had a serious crack, not hoped he would fall out the back.

Its all about attitude and ours leaks out onto the ground sadly.

Because kids refusing to talk to certain teams will be penalised for draft tampering, along with any clubs proved to be involved.

The AFL has warned kids in recent years when there have been stories of exactly this.

Can't remember which kid it was, but his father was warning certain interstate teams not to draft him.

An established player with existing relationships with clubs and officials can make his own decisions.

No. The draft can be bent by certain clubs and not others. That is more the point.

Wet Coke was the team you were thinking of.

Yes during the powder finger days Wet Coke was warned by a family not to pick their son as i recall.

Nah, more recently.

Last year or the year before.

Gunston? Caddy?

Yip many would ask the same question

How much you were paying in your salary cap is irrelevant. You are never going to pay a player that does not talk to you or want to be part of your club.

Probably the best thing this site could do this year. At least it would be constructive.

I find it abhorrent that both Carlton & Collingwood were able to fast track players. The 2 biggest clubs in Victoria. Whilst we were flatly denied any chance to keep our number one pick.

If Ball was forced out of the Aints he should have taken his chances like all other registered AFL players.

Three weeks in and we're already looking forward to draft picks? Phwoar.

I know. It's tragic!!!

Welcome to AFL football 2012. Have you ever considered why players with choice would choose Carlton & Collingwood?

Whilst we were flatly denied any chance to keep our number one pick.

If you are referring to Tom - we made the best of a bad situation. Tom was gone. We simply had to make sure we got the best compensation possible within the guidelines set down by the competition. The guidelines where quite specific & quite clear. But I'm over it - its old news.

Luke made his own choices, for his own football career. Any sensible football person would respect that.

Sure Luke made a good choice. I have no problem with that. But the choice should not have been made available. The AFL assisted it.

Elliot Kavanagh apparently. Wanted to go to Essendon (or his dad did), so a bit of a kerfuffle with the interviews from North and the Swans.

Oddly enough, ended up at ... Essendon.

I see your point Sloonie, but (as per my comment above) I'm with billy on this. It's just too high risk and high stakes for the teams above us to nominate him, unless he really is rated the standout.

Another thing that will have them doubting themselves is is the fact that they know he probably wants to play for the Dees, and with his old man. Would you risk losing your preferred number one pick, and having to pick up a top 3 - 5 pick who may or may not want to return to be with his Dad in Melbourne after the first two years, just to stuff around another team that's wallowing around the bottom of the ladder with you??

There is no guarantee that JV would be rated by others or ourselves

Why not wait and see who is available

Just because his name is Viney doesnt make him an auto pick for the DEEs I think we should assess our needs and the available players at the appropriate time

I know. It's tragic!!!

Its not tragic its an absolute joke

Very interesting

I am always worried when demonlanders make assuptions about young players leave it to the Football department and the recruiters

As is said elsewhere Just becuase he is a Viney doesnt make him great necesarily and doesnt make him right for the MFC

I honestly cant believe people can't see what's going on. The two teams with compo picks tied to there finish on the ladder are serving up absolute garbage and nobody In the media has even mentioned tanking ....

Funny you should bring that up:

He's great, and he's right for MFC.

And he's already signed.

Recruiting is an art form more than a science and the skill of a recruiiter is identify the talent for AFL. A recruiter is always going to have some hit and misses hopefully more hits than misses.

And if you do a proper analysis of all drafts you will find that the high picks provide you with a greater probability of accessing the best players. And to improve those odds you need a good recruitment team.

BTW, in your use of 2001, the F/S laws and changed. Ablett jnr and Waite were obtained with 3rd round picks. The law changed. Both were first round pick potential. Ablett pushing up into the top bracket.

With the risk of you suspending me again- be fair and accurate in your debate,Whilst you are accurate in pointing out Waite & Ablett were 3rd rd picks, they were father & son picks when you had to give up a rd 3 pick for them.

Yep, that's the one.

I guess it can be done.

Geez, the bombers are seriously able to brainwash some kids into wanting to go there.

They are bordering on serial draft tampering too.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
