SEN in need of priority pick

Featured Replies

I'm not sure if it's just me but the last week has shown up a major problem with the team at SEN.

When dealing with a major issue such as the Jurrah situation, there was no one at the station capable of the in depth analysis that was needed to make sense of the issues.

Love him or hate him, and a lot of the time I found him a pain in the ...Francis Leech has left a huge hole, he had the intellectual capacity, knowledge and experience to really dig into an important issue like this and ask the right questions. Thanks to some of the posters on this forum like Fork and the links to the Waitley/Leech interview on the ABC, I was able to get a better understanding.

If you heard the interview Ox and Marco had with one of the Riolis' I think it was Dean the other day, it was just amatuer time. Again tonight on the Eddie interview topic they just didn't have a handle on the issue at all apart from the fact that Eddie had a blue with Pat Smith.

I love listening to SEN, I love my footy and I don't want to character assasinate here but the roster is not well balanced at present. Marco and the Ox are both entertainers, light weights when it comes to the real serious issues. Unfortunately neither of them is guilty of doing their homework. This team is not working for mine, both seperate with the right partner or segment fine, but not together.

Just to sidetrack for a mo did anyone hear the discussion with Rebecca Wilson this arvo, it was not that long ago with the Scully thing everyone (including most on SEN) was praising the NRL model of coming out and announcing when a player is moving clubs, why don't the AFL grow up. That one has sure turned on its head now.

Enjoy listening to Half, although I don't think we get a great run particularly with him and Robbo, but again he is not equiped for the real hard hitting stuff. A mate of mine couldn't stand Doran but I think he is part of the brain drain at the station, he was a journo who would get his hands dirty digging.

Breakfast is breakfast like all stations it's light and fluffy, KB is KB, champion player and good broadcaster and Finey is a true original, didn't hear his take on the Jurrah biz but he would probably be the most capable to deal with it. The overnight guys seem to be the work experience kids and their mates who are hanging around and get on air for a bit of a lark, apologies to Darren Parkin who does do his homework.

Hutchy, Pickers and Doc make me laugh but they're not going to get into anything too serious, it's not their brief.

Too many ex footballers and narrow focussed jouno's on air, I think SEN may need a priority pick in this years draft.

What SEN needs is less ads and less discussion of non-football related topics.

Every time I tune in on the drive home from work, they are talking about finance, or movies, or some other crap. If I wanted to listen to grown men talking sh*t, I'd go to a pub.

3AW nauseates me, but at least when the Jurrah story broke, they were covering it properly. I tuned into SEN and they were talking about building a deck. Really?

The only people who don't like Francis Leach are those who cannot comprehend different points of view and intelligent discussion. The same goes for Gerard Whateley. He was a rare voice of reason amongst a sea of peanuts calling up asking "how do you think Collingwood / RIchmond / Essendon /North Melbourne will go this year?".

With due respect, i dont think at this stage any media person (with the exception of Whateley and Flannigan) have been able to come close to grappling with the enormity of the issues that the incident has raised. I am no fan of SEN. i find their discussion on football lightweight, too much footy talkback from callers that make the Coodabeens blush and far too many ads. I would not be hanging them on this issue.

Agree with the OP

Got to say though, Sat morning with Pickers, Dr Turf and Hutchy is the best show on radio. Always have a laugh listening to them!

Has there ever been a radio station anywhere in the world with more ads than SEN ? I find it extraordinary.

I agree with CB and RR. Gerard Whateley and Martin Flanagan are the people to listen and read regarding this issue. So articulate, clear and concise, thought provoking and being able to paint a picture of recent events in such a way that has you on te edge with every word.

The rest to me is messy and cringeworthy.

As for ads and SEN, I find myself tuning out more often.

Not just hanging them on this issue, I think in general they are missing at least one quality person to really get into the bigger issues. It's just that this is the latest. Yes, it is a sports station but that doesn't mean it has to be dumbed down, at least not all of the time.

Finey's (Viney's) Final Siren, well they say truth is stranger than fiction.

Great call rjay..................Francis Leach was excellent, and I find Mark Allen pretty ordinary to be honest.

What about Triple Ad's, I mean Triple M

Could not agree more - Francis Leach is a huge loss to that show. Ox is a boof-head and Mark Allen is an amiable light-weight who knows next to nothing about anything except golf and maybe boxing. When you put them together it's a terrible recipe. Then add Robbo on Thursday nights and it's completely down the toilet - what a combo! I used to really enjoy Francis, Ox and Robbo on Thursday nights with the teams, it was amazing the chemistry Leach brought to that group - only really clear now that he has gone.

"Hello Frank Walker from National Tiles" kinda sums up SEN.

Heeelllooouuu, /Fran''''',,,,,,[Mute Button]......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................[un Mute] ^_^^_^^_^^_^^_^

I only found out yesterday that Francis Leach had moved on. Not been listening to SEN - have found if you want to listen to AM radio, driving through a carwash with your aerial extended is not the way to go. I thought after a patchy start, he & the Ox had developed into a really well balanced team over the past couple of years. Combining Leach's broad knowledge with Ox's "blokieness" worked well. He'll be missed.

Got to listen to SEN a fair bit yesterday & was amazed by the lack of homework done by all presenters.

Too much time on the golf course.

Finey probably the best there...

SO hang on. I haven't listened in in a while... What happened to Francis Leach?

Gone to the ABC.

Well count me among them - Francis Leach was surely one of the biggest "know all - know nothings" going around. I for one don't miss him, or his opinions, at all.

That said, I do agree with the base premise of this thread - SEN are in desperate need of a commentator with substance.

Might I also add, while I enjoy Mark Allen, he's inherited a complete dud in the "Soap Box' segment .. please .. a full half hour of crap which more often than not I'm forced to switch off .. come on guys - it's the drive segment - how about a bit of creativity.

Just a pity we can't have "Off the Bench" every day - clearly the most entertaining show on SEN.

That's my take !

Has anyone heard the Rex Hunt fishing show on Saturday mornings? So bad it makes me cringe. The old show was great, but sadly the old presenter passed away last year minutes after finishing a show. Very sad.

The other gem is the "Lawn Bowls Hour" at 6AM sunday. Scary stuff if going to sleep after a big one on the turps!!

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
