Colin Sylvia

I rate Sylvia. He's in our best 22, and we will not get proper value for him in any trade.

We need some older, hard bodied players around the place. And Sylvia's one of them.

IMO the Gold Coast Suns 'recruit kids at all costs' doesn't win games - or develop the young players particularly well.

Id rather an honest footy player who wanted to play 4 qtrs of footy.... maybe Col might meet one one day and it might rub off on him...who knows

I doubt it..there are already a few at the club but they dont seem to influence him much.

So many live in this world of make beleive...a world where magical things come true....and theres the rest of us who understand reality.

I agree with you RB

That is exactly what the MFC did during 2008 - 2011

And look what we have now

Not to disimilar to the GCS!

I agree with Jaded, Ben and others that he's being played in a defensive forward role to teach accountability and also because his limited pre-season restricts him in other roles. I don't agree with Jaded that he doesn't have attributes that Neeld values.

I didn't say he doesn't have attributes that Neeld would value, I said he's the least likely to adapt to our new game plan because he is so single minded in the way he plays, and has never shown any signs of adapting. That's why he is still a mediocre half forward flanker, and that's why he is being made to play as a defensive forward. Less likely to cost us the game from the goal square.

I really would like to belt some of you, 3 busted vertebrae and his heart and effort are denigrated, you imagine trying to come back and play the toughest contact sport short of boxing, knowing that your spine had been broken, and tell me you wouldn't take awhile to get up to speed. The downhill skiers are on this forum, whether Col is long term for us will be found out in the future but he has 2012 as a grace period for my money. This man has had serious injuries playing for the Demons, our club, and deserves a bit more respect, they are not pea heart injuries but things earned going in after the pill. If he was useless the opposition wouldn't play him so tight.

It's not like this year has been very different as every other year Col has played. Hell, even Beamer called him out after he won the B and F.

Col has never given us his best, I've never seen him gut run, always jogging off the ball, and rarely seen solid second and third efforts from him.

BTW the excuse for his average first 5 years of his career was OP, his jaw was broken off the ball, as was his nose....

Sylvia is known to be a solid trainer. He also adds grunt on the field. And class. I don't believe the football department would take any issue with these statements.

Sylvia's problem is that he goes missing in games. All too often. Mick Malthouse reckons it's due to his inability to concentrate for four quarters. That's a mental thing. And that's what we need to work on, as I reckon he actually wants to succeed - at this club.

He is one of our few 'classy', impact running players. And we need more class - not less. Surely this is clear to all.

We need more players 25-28 not less give the guy a break has had a serious injury was running really hard a few times on monday he just needs a 4 quarter effort

As has often been pointed out on these baords and highlighted no end of time. Cols issues are between his ears.. Dont you lot go and start hanging excuses on this or that now. He may well be restiricted in some manner ( as are many players ) through a lack of 100% injury free fitness but once youre over that whote line you better bloody well give 100% and 100% of the time. Thats their f'n job !!

Col is lazy...simply as.. A grossly talented player who just cant be stuffed doing it hard all the time. Even if he played at 75% ..for 50% of the game hed be a very valuable and influential player but he just doesnt seem to be able to muster even that.

Its annoying...and he gets paid for it....more annoying.

This post needs more love

Perhaps three broken vertebrae and a missed pre season might be what's wrong with him.

Can someone who is actually involved in the medical field please inform us as to the major difference between having broken vertebrae as opposed to fractured vertebrae? I don't want a wikipedia expert. I'd like to know the level of rehab, how long it would be expected to recover from such injuries, etc.

The other thing I want to know (and you don't have to be a university graduate to answer this!), why did Colin not particpate in the main training group during 9-tenths of the preseason training? He "did his back" in the NAB Cup - what was wrong with his fitness prior to that? I remember the training reports throughout the preseason had him mostly in the rehab group. Cheers.

Hers a simple rule.

If you are deemed fit to play...play

If you are not fit enough to do so, then convalesce and regain your fitness, then play.

Put the jumper on gameday...then your fair game for scrutiny

If hes not up to it then he ought not be out there, that he is out there suggests otherwise.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
