I am new to this forum and had a quick look and did not see that there have been any posts on this yet and I have always wondered this and wanted to see what you guys thought.

The last few years i have always thought that Sylvia would have a break out year and come close or push for it however this does not seem to have happened yet. After this year and seeing Sylvia's professionalism or lack of, I am starting to think that the next one may possibly come from Trengove.

What do you guys think on this?

Our last Brownlow Medallist was in 2000 (Woewodin), before that Stynes (1991), prior to that Moore (1984) and Wilson (1982). Four in nearly 30 years. The last being 11 years ago. These days more often than not it's to be a midfielder of very good quality and consistent performance in a dominating way that will put you in the frame.

I haven't seen anyone yet that fills those aspects that is on on our list.

Maybe Jack Viney.

Making the call on a guy that isn't even on our list? Wowee.

Moloney showed this season that he has the ability to break games open, and most importantly, do it with the umpires noticing. If he can find more consistency in his game, and if we can win more games as a team, I think he has the potential to win a Charlie.

A mate of mine who barracks for Carlton was wanting to put massive amounts of money on Judd 3/4 through the season. As I said to him, when the decision of who is to win is based on the opinion of the umpires, nothing is certain.

I got my copy of the 2011 Yearbook in the mail last night and was extremely surprised when reading the stats page to see that Robbie also only ever won one B&F. I was born in 1983 so only saw or remember the twilight of his career. However, the stories my father told me of him and all that I have read and seen suggests, he should have won more. Especially given the fact we had a very poor team pre 1987. Anyone care to explain whether this was a misprint or why ...

dont forget that in 2010 the other players performing better then judd probably also had good team mates who were taking points away from them. i beleive swan was favourite to win in 2010? same applies to flower.

You could well be right about Trenners and Charlie Watts, good luck to them. I just do not rate an umpires award, in the modern game they are just to busy to see the whole picture. Thus midfielders are the only eligable contenders.

Who was better than R Flower in his day? There were very few. But it is an interesting stat you bring up about the B&F.

i actually think that the umpires are close to the mark most years with the brownlow. I admit there are a few occasions where people wwill have different opinions on the winner and it could be to how the points are distributed rather then who they are distributed to.

if there is a team with a solid midfield then the points will be distributed amongst them evenly all with none of them really making a big mark during the count, while othertimes the midfield could be carried by a single player or 2 (judd in 2010) which results in them pulling a high count and winning as no other team mates are taking points away from them.

Trengove has as good a shot as any though. Maybe Viney, obviously depending on how he steps up to AFL level. We only get to chose midfielders right? That's how this fickle award plays out these days hey?

I always thought Col could but unless he steps up i doubt it. Watts has the right attributes to win it if he plays around the ground.

As an award I fear its tarnished by only being able to be won by a small group of onballers.

I'd like to see Backs and forwards recognised in some way.

If he learns to keep his elbows down, yep. The role of a key forward or key defender is totally denigrated by the Brownlow Glitz. We all know a gun Centre Half Forward is in most winning Grand Final sides. There worth is equal to any midfielder or should be.

Possibilities in no particular order;

Judd, Murphy, Swan, Pendlebury, Mitchell, Ablett et al take your pick. Would love to see Mitchell get it!

for a demon to win it would mean that the dees are travelling pretty solidly and to me thats a good thing regardless of what people rate the award as

and u never know what can happen in the afl, who knows, maybe morton will have a break out year......

And maybe Demetriou will greet everyone at the gates next year with a handshake and a howdy do..

But he did not win it.

And IMO he never will.

If you are a back man you would consider the award a joke.

If JC came back as a CHB he would probably fail to poll a vote.

I think Watts can break the mould with his running capacity and all-round game. Will be capable of playing like Koutoufides if he keeps filling out.

Natanui could become the first ruckman to win since Scott Wynd if he can find that explosive gear more often.

You may be right, Unfortunately I am fairly cynical about the brownlow these days.

I hope a Forward / ruckman does win it soon, the award needs it

The AFL Coaches Player of the Year Award is a more accurate assessment of who the best player is each year. And probably the best way of deciding such honours.
