Finally got to the end of Westworld (season 1) ... absolute first rate.  'Quarry' was very good as well.

Just started out on 'Humans' (season 2) and that's another good show (although the Swedish original version 'Äkta människor' is better)  If you're looking for some light comedy, 'The Last Man on Earth' is good for a laugh.

Here are some of the shows that I'm looking forward to this year (dates are approximate)

Homeland (Jan 15)

Baskets (Jan 19)

Billions (Feb 19)

House of Cards (Feb 24)

Orphan Black (April)

Silicon Valley (April)

Mr Robot (June/July)

Stranger Things (July)

Fargo (????)

Better Call Saul (????)

Black Mirror (????)

Quarry (????)

Westworld (????) ... might be 2018

Have you seen Narcos? I just finished season two and really enjoyed it. Quarry was another favourite of mine, I thought Logan Marshall-Green was fantastic.

I watched the first few episodes of Narcos but couldn't get into it ET ... probably because I know the story a little too well.  May revisit at a later date.  Ditto for 'The Exorcist'

Originality is key but not always ... watched the 1931 version of 'The Maltese Falcon' (not the famous 1941 version) and quite enjoyed it.  The film was made in pre-code Hollywood so was more true to the book.

Just finished watching 'The OA' on Netflix, without giving much away I thought it was quite predictable, I'm not sure if I liked it or not at this stage, I'll have to sleep on it.

Had a look at the first 2 episodes of 'Travelers' & 'Incorporated' ... both new sci-fi series.

Both have potential ... like any new show, there needs to be an affinity/attachment to the characters portrayed.  Travelers might win-out over Incorporated in that area but both shows are well worth a look (if you like sci-fi)

Incorporated borrows from 'Gattaca' a bit whilst Travelers is a little like '12 Monkeys' ... not copied though as both series are quite original.

Time really does fly doesn't it? ... it's been nearly 3 and a half years since the finale of 'Breaking Bad'.

It's time for the re-watch.

Here's the insider podcast ... n.b. episode 1 is season 2 episode 1 (not season 1)

And here's a 'related' clip from Jimmy Fallon ...

TWIN PEAKS is back after 26 years on a cliffhanger, this April. Cannot wait. Will be getting Stan just for that, although they've started to amass a really good catalogue, by licensing most of Amazon's catalogue from them, making their entrance into the Australian market pointless. I cancelled by Amazon subscription and got refunded as they literally have three drama series on the Australian catalogue and hardly any of their big shows.

As for other shows, THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE season 3 is my most anticipated show of 2017. Finished season 2 a couple of weeks ago and boy, is that show getting good.

THE FALL season 3 was forgettable, should have stopped at 2.

THE AFFAIR's season 3 was all over the place. They should have stopped at 2 too, but it's been renewed for season 4.

BOSCH season 3 will be back this year as well, while GAME OF THRONES should be interesting in its second last season.

I've got access to anything & everything in my household ... there are set-top boxes and wires aplenty.  It's our one and only real indulgence though.

Good news for fans of the acclaimed series - 'Power Without Glory'

All 26 episodes have been posted up on youtube ... they've been up for 6 months now so hopefully they'll stay up.

Two shows to recommend, both available on SBS on demand (at least partially):

'Trapped' - an Icelandic murder mystery thriller about a small coastal town which is isolated from the rest of the country at just the right time by a blizzard.

'The Night Manager' - another brilliant British show. Tom Hiddleston plays a hotel night manager who infiltrates an arms ring led by Hugh Laurie (who's very, very good). Also features our own Elizabeth Debicki. This show has convinced me that Hiddleston could be a good option for the next Bond.

That link to Power without Glory has disappeared by the look of it

Tried another link and got Richard and Ana after sex ... fascinating world .... youtube ... if you go beyond the DIY videos which is my usual domain.

The other old series I am looking for is Phoenix based loosely on the Russel Street Bombings. Got the first season from my local library but have never been able to find the second season.

What did you guys think of the Young Pope?

Yep DJ, noticed that ... I binge-watched it knowing that the show might be taken down ... it was a great, great Australian series.  A veritable who's who of Aussie talent were involved too - Graham Kennedy,  Graeme Blundell,  Helen Morse,  Gerard Kennedy,  Rowena Wallace, Gus Mercurio,  John Hargreaves,  Briony Behets,  Cul Cullen,  Elaine Baillie,  Frank Wilson and numerous others all played minor but memorable roles.

Gets a rerun on free-to-air periodically so keep an eye out - @Sir Why You Little might be able to tell us when.

Another favourite of mine from that era was a show called 'Boney' ... true story - the band 'Boney M' was named that way after the producer of the band caught hold of the Aussie detective series when it aired in Germany.

Anyway, you can catch hold of the show at this web address ... it will cost you $3 per episode but unless you can somehow get hold of the DVD's, it's the only way to watch the show.  I've watched a few using paypal.

I'd never watched the show in it's entirety before (Power Without Glory) ... when it was originally aired I wasn't as interested in these type of historical dramas and whenever it was repeated I'd always miss an episode or 3.

House of Cards series 5 airs in late May but the real-life goings on at the White House and elsewhere means the TV drama is going to have to be even more 'out-there' ha ha

A few TV series to look out for ...

Better Call Saul (season 3)  April 10

Fargo (season 3)  April 19

Silicon Valley (season 4)  April 23

Orphan Black (season 5 final)  June 10

The most recent seasons of Billions,  Homeland & Baskets have already been released this year ... all up to their usual standards too.

Big Little Lies might be worth a look ... just released on cable (foxtel) the show was written by Australian author Liane Moriaty and stars Nicole Kidman & Reese Witherspoon.

Glitch looks the goods after a decent first season - this award winning Australian paranormal drama loosely borrows from Les Revenants (The Returned)

I'm delving into some more Aussie drama with Jack Irish,  Janet King,  The Code,  Rake,  Tangle,  Spirited,  Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries,  Serangoon Road & The Doctor Blake Mysteries all on the must-see list.

Here's a One-Series-Wonder from the past called 'Nowhere Man' (IMDb link)

All the episodes from this one and only series (released in 1995) have been uploaded onto youtube so if you like your drama/mysteries with a real twist, you may like this.  The show is very much in the mode of 'The Prisoner'

You can watch 'Nowhere Man' here

'Curb your Enthusiasm' is back finally (after a 6 year hiatus) ... the first 2 episodes have been up to the usual high standard - esp episode 2.

'Stranger Things' returns in a couple of weeks on Netflix ... Season 1 was terrific so looking forward to season 2.  'Glitch' season 2 is currently available on IView - worth a look.

And good news re 'True Detective' - it's back in 2018 (no news on the month yet) ... Read all about season 3 here

In the meantime, it's time to have a re-watch of Season 1 of the outstanding crime/drama series.  3 years in between is time enough.  Wasn't in to podcasts then so that will be a good add-on this time around.

For those of you who have  a strange sense of humour, Rik & Morty is quite amusing.  Also IT Crowd is quite good too.

Not exactly current TV but I happened upon this excellent podcast series about Seinfeld (the TV series)

The guys from 'Post Show Recaps' are A1 and well worth a listen.  The perfect companion to a great show.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
