Came across 3 new Sci-fi series that have got me hooked after just 1 episide.

With a heavy accent on the psychological, mystery and thriller with quite dark elements

Dark Matter (Aussie Joel Edgerton stars)

Severance (Ben Stiller Directs)

The Penguin (just released) (Colin Farrell)

I watched ep 1 of The Penguin and thought it shows a lot of promise… very dark!

I would highly recommend a series on Netflix called Move to Heaven, a Korean production about a business that cleans the rooms of the deceased. It’s incredibly moving and is, for me at least, one of the best series I can recall seeing, ever!

Also, while on Netflix, the have the latest Godzilla offering that marks his 70th anniversary. It’s called Godzilla Minus One and is a seriously good film, not just as a kaiju film, but  as a piece of writing, acting and directing; simply put, it’s brilliant!! They also have the B&W release of the same film titled Godzilla Minus One, Minus Color. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Slow Horses (spy thriller) on Apple TV. Gary Oldman is very good in it I thought and the comedy is gold.

I got a free 3 months access to Apple TV+ and have been doing a bit of binging. Slow Horses is brilliant (just finished season 1); so good in fact that it kept me watching into the wee small hours.  I also watched Hello Tomorrow which is a retro-futuristic series in the vein of the superb Fallout, but without the violence. I loved it.

I’ve been recommended a series called For All Mankind, so it looks like I’m going to get good value out of my free time on Apple TV+.

The first season or two of For All Mankind was really good. After that, it went downhill (IMO). Still watchable, just not as good. The Penguin is amazing. @hardtack @Macca are you up to date? I thought the latest episode (ep. 4) was one of the best episodes within any series that I’ve seen in a long time. Season two of Silo premieres soon, really enjoyed season 1. Am going to check out Hello Tomorrow now.

I’m just getting to the end of Season 1 of For All Mankind (about to start ep.9 of 10) and am loving it. I’m up to date with The Penguin, and yes, that 4th episode was excellent.

I haven’t seen any of Silo yet; is that on Apple TV+ or Netflix or Prime or Foxtel? 🤣. I have been watching The Rings of Power on Prime, which is very good. On Netflix they are currently showing three movies which I can’t recommend highly enough, two of which are the same movie, one in colour and the other in B&W, Godzilla Minus One, and the other is Hayao Miyazaki’s most recent animation, The Boy and the Heron.

@hardtack @Ethan Tremblay

Must have a look at 'For all Mankind',  'The Boys' and revisit 'Silo'

Got to the end of season 1 of 'Dark Matter' & 'Severance.  Both 4/5 stars with Dark Matter slightly ahead

But Severance is highly intriguing and less transparent than Dark Matter

Both shows are set for at least 1 more series.  Top notch sci-fi

As for 'The Penguin' ... simply superb  The best Drama I've seen this year.  4 episodes in

But only 4 eps left as it's a mini-series.  There again, the show is so popular that the Producers may find a way to extend the show!

Or maybe some kind of spin-off?

While you’re on Netflix, watch the Korean series, Move to Heaven… it’s one of the best drama series I’ve seen, full stop.

Also, there’s the second season of a great Korean series Hellbound, starting on Friday (on Netflix).

The Day of the Jackal is excellent

Moves at high pace with numerous story lines.  The 2 leads play their roles superbly

Watched all 5 episodes yesterday now I need to wait for weekly episodes, which I am not a fan of.

Next show on my list is Shoresy (a spin off of Letterkenny) and then Silo.

Episode 5 was fantastic with the usual cliff-hanger finish!  In fact, the series (The Day of the Jackal) gets better with each episode

Highly recommended

Footnote: The original film starring Edward Fox was a real favourite of mine but this new series really stands up on its own

I’ve never seen the original series, only the meh movie from the 90s.

British dramas are just a+ viewing though

There was never an original series, only the 1973 movie and also the Bruce Willis movie called 'The Jackal' (which was just average)

The 1973 Movie was superb and still stands up today.  Often remakes fail but the current mini-series is excellent and stands with the 1973 Movie

They are both very good

Here's the trailer from the 1973 Movie

Initially I thought the final episode of 'The Penguin' was excellent but slightly surprising.  But when looked at from an overall perspective a week later, the ending was close to perfect and very well done

Will make some further comments in a week or 2

Couldn’t agree more!

I think it has left open the chance of the return of a character who appears to have been killed, and the very final shot provides a strong clue as to what will unfold in season two!

It is a brilliant series!

I also watched the entire three seasons of Ted Lasso over 3 days, and I have to say that, along with Slow Horses, that has to be one of the best scripted and acted series that I’ve seen to date. To maintain the level of consistency that they do, over three seasons, is nothing short of miraculous.

*Spoiler Alert*

As for the The Penguin, the logo in the sky at the end was just brilliant

So there will be more, but what that more is and how long away the spin-off might be, is anyone's guess

And how good was Cristin Milioti as Sofia!

Played her part to perfection

She didn't quite steal the show as Colin Farrell was just mesmerising as the Penguin

I'm giving it 4.5 Stars

Yes, the logo! I am wondering if Sofia will be continuing as herself, or is she likely to emerge in the role of an actual Batman super villain such as Catwoman (was she a villain?) or as the Joker’s ‘partner’ (name slips my mind).

I like to think that Victor will reappear.

I watched For All Mankind… first two seasons were fantastic, but I thought it flounders a bit in seasons 3&4.

Wondering what to watch next… maybe Dark Matter.

Catwoman already exists in the 'Matt Reeves Batman universe', Sofia also received a letter from Selina Kyle (Catwoman) hinting a possible reunion in the next Batman movie. Imagine she'll just continue as herself, don't imagine they'd make her Harley Quinn, despite having a similar arc from the 'asylum' point of view.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
