VFL alignment v stand alone

I notice Collingwood Reserves have a bye in R22 next week and play their last game for the season THIS week. Similarly for Geelong Reserves have just 2 more games for the season. Neither side can make the VFL finals. The standalone team playing for development and not to win definitely has a big downside at this time of the year. By GF day Collingwood players not in the 22 will not have had an opportunity to play competitive football for 6 weeks.

Interesting situation isn't it & i had not thought of this until now....still do not think the Affiliation system will last for more than 2-3 years.

The lack of unity between the 2 playing styles is more of a problem for mine....eg. The Fevola problem, and that is what it is for the MFC...our young forwards are not the A Targets...Fev is.

I would be happy to contribute to a Reserve side through an extra levy on my membership. The Top Clubs will stand alone.

For selfish reasons I'm happy for the club to stick with Casey.

I only live 20 min drive from Casey Fields so it's really convinient for me. Also with MFC having a 30 year agreement with the City of Casey and Casey being a growth area I see the affiliation doing MFC a lot of good.

Also don't forget Hawthorn, Carlton and West Coast don't have stand alone teams in the VFL/WAFL so it doesn't automatically equal success. Also St. Kilda have a rather rocky relationship with Sandringham yet they should have won the AFL premiership in 09' and were a ball bounce away from winning it last year so I'm not to concerened about the affiliation as yet.

Edit: Changed St. Kilda's VFL team to Sandringham instead of Casey.

If they ever did split Melbourne would stay in the Casey Precinct. There could be 2 teams playing out of the one stadium.

STAND ALONE

ok, so I have a good friend who works with the collingwood VFL team, and he's left me in no doubt that it's the only way.

Collingwood is set up as 100% a "reserve" team

- They train to the SAME schedule, regardless of which day the reserve team is playing - i.e. the reserves prepare as if it is a friday night game even if it is a sunday VFL game

- They play to the SAME overall game plan, regardless of whether AFL strategies don't 100% translate to VFL

this means any personnel changes are seamless

It's about winning premierships and putting the club in the best position...i.e. no Fevola getting in the way of Lucas Cooke

Understand your point of view Pitchfork but there are economic and territory issues that need to also come into the equation for us. I agree that some issues need to be clarified and worked on so as everyone is working in harmony but Hawthorn seem to be ablle to manage it.

Any insight from your friend into why Collingwood & Geelong for that matters VFL teams struggle when they play a game plan that works so well at AFL level but can't get it done in a lower level.

I'm not having a go of that's what it sounds like. I'm just curious as to why both their VFL teams seem to struggle a fair bit.

easy to see why. The VFL sides are not coached to win, but to learn a discipline.

The MFC need a stand alone reserve side to do this. What use is Fev kicking 7 but then pulling a tantrum when he is asked to come off???

does nothing but retard the growth of young Melbourne forwards...

The contra view is that they learn what winning is about and take that desire to the AFL side.

Perhaps we should play Green, Davey, and Sylvia there for the first 4 games of 2012!

I am also a little over the Geelong / Collingwood comparison.

The reason for their success is fairly simple from where I sit.

They just have a lot of very good players.

They were and are coached well too.

This would certainly be an issue for those two clubs but it's a small price to pay for the increased development from having complete control over your young players. Young, Sinclair and Fasolo are good examples of this

Casey Football club chasing Premierships is all very fine, but it does little for the MFC.

Look, there's definitely something to being a winner...but who really cares how the MFC's VFL affiliate does once the next season rolls around?

The dominance of Sandy from 2000 gives me no solace when it comes to the MFC.

- The money thing is extremely valid, and the biggest stepping stone. But surely the ideal scenario, if money were no object, would be stand alone

Christ, get off his back.

There are 100 players who sook in the AFL about poor delivery and being benched noticably Riewoldt x2, Goodes and Buddy.

Just because the guy has had a rocky past doesn't mean you should be singling him out for cracking sads. If Casey is a worse standard than Melbournes kicking id be having my tantrum at the 3 min mark of the first.

Why get off his back??? Is Fevola employed by the MFC?

His Presence retards the learning of our young forwards..FFS i am so over Brendan Fevola kicking goals at Casey

When has an MFC player had a chance to kick a bag??

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
