The Ox was one of my favourites but I think he's doing nothing there other than trying to repair the damage to his credibility. He has made numerous comments to the effect that he was 98% certain that Scully or someone on his behalf had already made a commitment to GWS. The revelations of the past 24 hours and Cameron Schwab's comments on the Ox's programme this evening have left his credibility in tatters. Scully might well still sign with GWS but that won't make his earlier claims proven. Earlier in the evening he claimed that he was now 99% certain that Scully would go which is a different proposition.

Bob's right, Schwabby wiped the floor with him.

I wonder what the catalyst to adding an extra 1% was.

It's commendable that you back the Ox but that turn phrase "the guy gave his all for the dees"

please just read his book if you can stomach it. You will soon realise the error in that statement.

You may be correct DD

We all have our opinions that is what Demonland is about.

I started this because I thought someone was having a cheap shot.

I Still think that.

Some people attached people personally

because that do not agree with there opinion.

I disagree with people on here quite often.

I hope I do not call them names because I do not agree with them.

Character assassination is an easy thing on here you do not have to prove a thing!

Not really trying to character assassinate him, just relaying a story portraying that his scant regard for the Dees in his book is most likely not sinister just the way he is.

FWIW my favorite player growing up, wore the number five in every sport I played. Doesn't stop me saying that it was one of the worst footy books, no real insight into his footy career, more of a focus on gambling which most likely would have been his intention.

I just edited my reply.

I don't want to get into a slanging match.

I hope a lot of media commentators take notice and exercise more honest reporting. Its not just the Ox who is looking st.upid right now. I loved watching mike sheehan 3 week ago "on the couch" asking Lynch (sculz velocity manager) if Melbourne supporters should be optimistic about sculz signing. Lynch responded unflinchingly that "yes they should be optimistic". The perplexed looked on that pathetic reporters face was a joy to watch. Makes me wonder who are Mikes "leads". What second rate sources do the media use to sensationalise their articles...

No probs Old Dee, The Ox was obviously a favourite of yours as well and kudos for going into bat for him, a little prematurely in my case.

Guess what this proves and what was also proved on the merger night is that supporters love the club first and foremost, players are then admired because they wear the Red and the Blue. When former players who have bled for the club wanted to kill it off, the fact that they were former players was irrelevant.

I'm comfortable with the notion of paying Scully 'over normal price' in the form of a one-year massive front-end to the contract which then leaves the remaining years on or about the level that an comparably performing player on our list would get.

The front-end is a benefit to him, and I believe any player would be more comfortable knowing that he wasn't etting paid excessively for the same job his teammates were doing.

Framed as a 'retention bonus', acknowledging that he has given up as much as $2m to stay with the club, I believe all parties can feel comfortable with the final result.

The only person or organisation left with any stink on it is the AFL HQ for the all-round botched way they have gone about setting up GWS. Less extra investment in local Sydney clubs than in Israel Folau. Surely one maximises the other and both had to be done - Folau on his own won't convert 500,000 people!

Mike Sheahan should retire at the end of this season....his handling of this Scully story has been repeatedly cheap, shoddy & down right incorrect....I mean FFS he was at Tom's presser and then the next day said it was all lies basically.....i wonder what scurge he will scribble tomorrow....Enough Mike.

Fair enough cheap shots are just that.

Back to discussion.

I don't know what to make of it all but here are the points from the interview

1. Schwartz was crying plan B for the members/supporters and he frequently said 'if' Scully goes we need a plan B.

2. Schwab retorted that the compensation rules are the rules.

3. Ox believed that the rules for compensation were changed by heavy lobbying from Geelong because of Ablett.

4. Schwab retorted that the rules were made while he was on the committee and a gap was identified where a marquee player (top 5 in competition) wouldn't be adequately compensated. That Ablett going and rule change were not done in response to speculation he may go to GC.

5. Laidley stated that MFC would be hoping to sell other things than just remuneration. Schwab categorically agreed and stated this had been a key reason/purpose/foundation of the club rebuild.

6. Ox and Schwab in interplay, interjections and the Ox general inference that Schwab/club was somehow being negligent in not seeking something more from the AFL Executive was extremely uncomfortable.

7. Schwab was at pains to suggest that over the course of a 15 year career if T. Scully was the marquee player they expect he will be that it was no real difference in his total player earnings he'd receive elsewhere with GWS able to pay more upfront but having to fall into line with rest of the clubs.

8. Schwab again restated the faith he has in T. Scully's character and that speculation that he has done anything other than what he said he would was unfair and was assassinating his good character. He mentioned that a lot of his character traits or profiling were the reason he was so highly touted and selected at 1.

9. After the break without right of reply Ox continues to espouse that Brian Cook had lobbied heavily for compensation change. Marko and Laidley both agreed that Schwab performed admirably. But that it was his job to sell hope and belief to supporters as was his job and basically he wouldn't be able to state he had a plan B because it would admit Scully was already gone.

Actually just listen to the bloody podcast:-

That pretty much covers it DD.

I actually think CS did a good job.

SEN did not get up my nose.

They will always have the last say.

It pays to invest a bit of faith in the listeners.

Most people see through the dross the media trots out.

It will give you heart burn if you take too much notice of them.

Schwabby is going in hard.....Scully aint gone anywhere yet...

Cam & the Admin will be judged on the ability to keep wanted players. He has to go hard as he can, and I know he will.

Posted

The Main point i took from all that was...Schwabby said "Tom cannot fully understand why people do not believe his word? He is learning how the media work"

Cameron Schwab is one cool operator...so at this stage i am quite confident the skull will stay.

The Media Frenzy must look for a new story....(for now)

We have to make it about sculls integrity. If we match or better the offer??? or get reasonably close to it, & he leaves, well It's on his head re his integrity. He said he wants to be a ONE Club Player, we'll see How Much that means to him. And How strong he values his honesty and loyalty morals?

You know Carltoon got Judd with the 3rd party arrangements.

So we can try to do this as well,,,,, BUT, GWS will also have the 3rd party arrangements as well.

We cant slag the Ox .Loved the big fella when busting packs and kicking goals for us and he probably feels a bit down about his own financial situation compared to the position Scully is in ,along with Ward ,Judd ,Ablett etc .He was a gun in his time and would have got big bucks at any club but he chose to play his career in red and blue .Schwartz was the best player to pull on a boot for us since Lyon.

Shwarta could punt too.

He won half a mill in a day!!

Ox has had a tough life and is a tough guy and is obviously no Dostoevky .

I'll admit Schwarta isn't the best journo/ author going but hes a demon whether he likes it or not .

and he knocked Sam Newman on his arse ,so good on him .

i strongly believe that there is no way the AFL will allow Scully not to go to GWS. It is their dream and in their best interests for him to go, and i think he(scully) is being guided by the powers to be

no substance to this, just my views on it all

AFL would want a bigger name if that were the case. They had that troll Rebecca Wilson on SEN prior to Schwab and she said whilst he was a talking point up there, they all had no idea who he was, they were just amazed at the amount of coin he could potentially get.

Ox was better than Lyon. Just didn't have the longevity in his early career with those knees, so missed a part of his development through injury.

Just a pity he copped those injuries, or he would have overhauled Carey. A dynamic player who others struggled to 'hold', like Carey.

This forum far to easily ridicules people who disagree with it. Scully has chosen to keep the fire going. He has either not made up his mind. Which is legitmate. But he could put it all to bed by signing. He has chosen to wait until the end of the year. What does he expect but people to speculate and come up with opinions on both sides.

I agree he was potentially the most significant player at demonland since the 50 and 60's. As good as Robbie Flower was, the Ox was CHF and brilliant goal scorer. I believe would have at least equalled Carey

You're dead right, but let's remember he is a 19 (?) year old kid, who did not ask for all this. It is not his fault, and he shouldn't be forced into any decision any earlier than he feels comfortable with.

I think she's being a bit generous on Tom being a "talking point" ...

GWS gets next to no coverage up here. I work in sports media and have contacts at the Sydney papers and trust me no-one cares.

When it is launched it will get some publicity, but not what the AFL want or need. It is not going to conquer all in the western suburbs. Not now, not ever.

Tom's contract situation has crept in a couple of times, usually on the back of a second hand Mike Sheahan piece, at the bottom of the last page of the Daily Telegraph.

Nothing is coming from the Sydney sports media, because none of them really give a toss. Wilson is right, people up here don't know who he is nor do they care unfortunately.

And why would they, really? The West is going to be very hard to take.

And this small recognition is only to say the bare minimum of what is going on, and to make sure that (some) people are still a little aware that there is a multi million dollar sports organisation trying to build itself at Blacktown.

Because there is no real impact being made.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
