Yeah sure we are a young list but the team that played on the weekend is on average only one year younger than the pies team that one the flag last year. I for one can't see the team that played North on the weekend winning the flag next year. Our development or lack of is a massive concern and Bailey will lose his job as a result it's just a matter of when it happens.

it's probably pretty fair to say that all the bolded players are either substandard for AFL players or so young that they cannot be expected to make much difference. If we had a full list to choose from only 2 of those blokes would be in there, probably Tappy and Gys

Last year we had performances, just like the Adelaide win, but supporters have gotten ahead of themselves, thinking we are more developed than we are.

There's even a perception that we have "gone backwards"!

At some point you need to sit back and realise you overestimated how far along the curve we were.

Yeah, we're sick of waiting, but that doesn't mean it is possible or reasonable to expect us to be ahead of where we are right now.

It's all about time to develop the kids' bodies, and games to develop their minds.

I think we should be able to agree that the mature players won't take us much further than where we are now.

There was once an Australian Rules football team that had not won a premiership since the 1960's.

They were coached by a decent media savvy ex-Essendon player.

Their results were so ordinary they even received the first two draft picks one year.

The fans were revolting.

There came available a massively successful former coach. He had dragged a fairly ordinary team into a couple of losing grand finals and when given the players, actually won the premiership.

The fans demanded his appointment and the football club acquiesced.

After only 15 rounds the fans were again revolting, the said super coach was sacked and a member of the committee thought he could do the job better.

It would appear St Kilda has missed their "premiership window".

I do not suggest St Kilda would have been more successful if Tim Watson had remained coach. I do not say Dean Bailey ought not be replaced at the end of the season. I do however suggest the club should hasten slowly in making changes to the football department as massive as changing coaches, particularly during the season. And just because Malthouse has had some success, and some ordinary failures, in the past, it does not mean he is automatically the "answer".

I think that every rational person is able to agree with the reasons why we need to give Bailey time and why the list needs time to develop.

However humans are emotional beings. In fact decision making, at its very essence, is emotional. That's why we have the emotional responses to the coach sacking threads that proliferate. But people need to recognise that these are emotional responses rather than rational thought.

I am sure that the board recognises this and takes the right path, regardless of whether or not the supporters like it. After all, ask Collingwood supporters in the mid/late 2000s about sacking Malthouse, or Geelong supporters about Thompson. Short memories.

Now at the end of the year Bailey will have had 4 years. Plenty of time to decide if he is the right person to take the players on their next step to success. This decision by its very nature will be a combination of emotional and rational thought (not just rational).

At the moment I would put Bailey on the backfoot. He has to show/prove why he should have his contract extended, more than others show/prove why he must go. Notice I said "more" rather than "instead of". Winning a flag is brutal stuff.

So Artie, is this the level of team performance that you expected from us this year?

And we should still stick with Dean for another couple of years, even if our performance doesn't improve over the rest of the season?

Because for me, we've got to improve over what we've seen so far. I certainly didn't expect finals, but I didn't expect them to be this bad either.

I'm seeing exactly what I expected.

I'll wait and see how the season plays out before making a decision on Bailey.

I think at this stage I'd give him another year.

I haven't seen anything disturbingly bad from him this season.

The fact we've been able to win some games and perform so well in patches is actually a tick against his name.

Over the course of the season I want to see continual individual development, like we have already seen from the likes of Watts, Maric, & to a lesser extent Tapscott & Gysberts.

Team development in terms of implementing the structures would be nice to see, but it's going to be hard depending on injuries.
