Look at our rookies at the moment, we've only got Michael Newton (after Spencer and Jordie are upgraded) I believe.

That means that we've got 5 picks in the rookie draft this year.

With Gold Coast coming in and GWS having the first eight picks, it means that our first pick is pick 14 and then every 17th pick after that. It's likely that we'll be picking up our final rookie selection somewhere in the 70-90 range.

Also remember that we can upgrade a rookie from round one as a result of only having one veteran on the list.

The salaries of rookies only count for half on the salary cap, so we may be able to pick up a player in a similar way to the pre-season draft and promise to promote them to the senior list in round one.

That gives us the ability to still use four picks in the draft, and also to pick up an experienced player via the rookie draft in order to replace Bruce.

It seems that if we can speak to a player before hand, and convince them to enter the rookie rather than the pre-season draft in order to come to Melbourne, then we may be able to replace Bruce with an experienced player without it costing us a spot on our senior list.

Should we do this? Who would you list to see come to the club as a mature age rookie?

What Gooner has pointed out really makes BP & the recruiting staff task very diddicult.It will be very interesting whom we pick- but I believe some experienced players will be in the mix at least.IMO at least two of the five will be experienced footballers either from the AFL or other leagues.I might add- I thought with Bruce leaving we now have 5 picks in the National draft & 5 rookie picks. I understand we may only take 4 picks in the National leaving a pick in the PRE SEASON DRAFT- Am I correct or wrong again?

Wrong again!

Veteran list spot freed up by Bruce gives us an extra rookie selection. We only have 4 spots on the primary list.

    Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill.     Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval.     With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.
