I'm a huge fan of the Thursday night games ... either listening to the game live on tunein or try and avoid the scores and watch the game 'as live' on a Friday evening either before the footy or straight after.  Once the footy is done it's pure NFL on a Friday night.  We get our mini-fix of NFL before it all happens on a Monday.

The full schedule of the week 16 games falls on Christmas eve this year and we even get a game on Christmas day as well (AEDT) - Denver @ Oakland.  The Raiders will be an interesting team to watch with Gruden in charge.

Similar for New Years eve here for all the week 17 games (again, AEDT)

The other 2 Thanksgiving games (Nov 22) is the early game (Chicago @ Detroit) followed by the late game (Washington @ Dallas)  The Falcons @ Saints is the evening game on Thanksgiving.

Maybe the one BIG area AFL has it over NFL. The spread of game times.

I like your idea of watching live. Thing is, in a fantasy comp, you get the news more or less as it happens. I can't hack the 4-5am games... Sometimes I wish I wasn't hooked on fantasy footy.

I still feel like maybe one day we'll have enough demonlanders to start a league.

The tipping comp might attract a few more here ... a dozen regular contributors would be ideal but we've probably had well over 20 different contributors over the length of the thread.

I'm not big on fantasy sports but I know plenty who are so your idea is well worth persevering with Dappa.  Once the practice games are done I'll try and post up the game highlights of last years playoffs.

In the meantime,  here's a treat - you may have seen the mic'd up version of the Super Bowl but if not,  enjoy!  To view the clip you'll have to go via youtube but don't forget to full-screen it.

Ha. much appreciated Macca. You're a gentleman and a scholar as always. I have seen it, just the once, so I'll enjoy again.

Yeah would be good to get the comp going again. Comps run quite well with 12 names. I have 2 others who I know would enjoy. Possibly 3. Maybe even 4 (myself included). You gotta have a critical mass of 50% of those really into it though or it descends into a bit of a waste of time, as it was last time. My brother and I actually started the original demonland AFL keeper league, and it was a similar disaster of abuse and misunderstanding. I pulled out when he was being abused, he pulled out soon after. So it IS a hairy concept.

So I think I'll keep prompting everyone, and if they go for it one day, I'd be happy to manage. But until then... I'll be taking you @Gorgoroth @layzie @cowboy_from_hell down, and returning to my rightful place on the NFL thread throne.

There's a number of others who we can prompt up as we get closer to the start of the season ... JV7,  T_U,  DeeSpencer,  Cards13,  Dee Zephyr,  Wadda We Sing,  Strafford,  Go the Biff,  Clintosaurus (last year's winner) and a few others.

The weekend before the first weekend of games works best for the tipping comp as it's fresh and people can post up their tips straight away if they wish to partake.  No good going too early.

I'll post up the honour roll,  the rules and the upcoming week 1 games with the lines at the same time.  Bonus weeks last year were weeks 2, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 & 17 and we probably need that many again to maintain interest.  As we all know any point gained is to be treasured!

In the meantime we could post up our tips for Divisional winners,  MVP,  SB Champs et al as we've done in the past.  That's always tricky but a bit of fun.

Even with that Macca it’s hard as most only play a small section of their starters in the last week so you get you great form line on teams

I'll be in the tipping again.

I also like Thursday night games as I go to the pub lunchtime Friday and depending on the time difference, get to watch at least half of the game. Jets @ Browns looks a cracker. ?

Seems Dante Fowler may be traded from the Jaguars to the Jets - also wondering where Dez ends up.

Only 16 days until the season starts. Can't wait.

To be honest the only clear standout divisional winner looks to be the Patriots (again) In every other division there are at least 2 teams with claims.  In some cases 3 genuine chances.

Who wins the AFC South?  All 4 teams are capable of having winning seasons if their QB's stay healthy.

Hi all. I follow Da Bears.

I have been browsing the thread every now and more than happy to join a tipping competition if you need some more numbers. I haven’t followed the NFL as closely the last few years although I still enjoy watching games on Foxtel.

I’m usually a ‘watch in the evening’ guy but I’m considering getting Tunein Premium. I quite enjoy listening to an NFL game on radio.

Alright Dee Zephyr on board! And once again proving that the NFC is superior ?

Yeah layz tunein is great ... the best 11 bucks a month you'll ever spend if you're a fan of overseas sports ... especially the American sports because of the time zones.

1 simple click or 2 and you're straight to the game.  All 4 USA sports convert well to live audio but it must be said that I'm an audio bloke.  I sometimes prefer it to visual.

Oh yeah for sure! You get some excellent callers (or should I say announcers) and if you like getting your team’s broadcast it’s perfect.

I really wish we could do that in the AFL. The team-specific calls, that is.

I've let my gamepass lapse finally. Too expensive, not worth it.

Here we go Wentz... Pass for 0/10, 3 sacks, 4 picks.... I don't care. Just leave the ground on two legs.

  • Author

Oh man. No Wentz as it turns out.

Good Eagles. Not one point. Oh well... At least the D showed up I guess.

Would certainly beat the crud we have to listen to now.

No gamepass for me either. I miss when they had the your team only option.

Thanks for the up Gorg.

Rodgers loves the guy ... I even detect a bit of awe when A-Rod speaks of him.  He is a rare talent and a future difference maker.  He's already more than decent.

We've got your blokes in week 8 at your house ... late arvo game so an 8.25am start.  Day off beckons! ha ha  I work for myself so it's really just a timing thing.

Weird scoreline ... really weird in fact,  Dappa.

Obviously it is just a practice game so nothing to see here.  But 5 zip to the Browns makes no sense at all.  Ignore.

Yeah I’d love to take the day off, but I’ve gone to casual work so I need to take what I can when I can and Monday’s are usually my busiest day. I have a massive packers fan at work so it’s great to talk nfl with him, but I’ll do the normal avoid everywhere til I get a chance to watch the games.

Yeah, I guess. I'd have liked to have seen some of the backups push. The Eagles injury list is massive at the moment, so many will be pressed into service.

But whatever. 3 weeks is an eternity.

  • NON-MFC: Round 10

The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?
