i think it says alot about the MFC and the importance they put on the website

Hey if we keep newton on the rookie list till he's 27-28 he might b the next ipod.....lol.

I hope Michael Newton gets another opportunity to prove himself at a senior level this year as his performance today at Casey was very impressive. He has always has the talent but now also seems to have the work rate and physical maturity to match it. His vertical leap and second efforts have helped him develop into a handy ruckman making him a more versatile and mobile key position player. Let's not write off this much maligned player just yet - he may yet prove to have a future role in our club.

Agree.....Newton's only contribution remains in the area of the Laws of Gravity......his career as an AFL football should be curtailed just as the apple hits the ground when it falls from the tree. He really optimises Melbourne's inabilty to make accurate assessment of football talent or lack thereof....a bit harsh some may say; but let's move him on and provide a spot for someone with brighter prospects; there are some uncut gems in the VFL eg Barlow. I wouldn't have an issue with Danny Hughes being given another chance.....he at least has a real dip; can take a mark and kick some goals.

He struggles to adjust to the pace of AFL football, is a poor kick and does not score enough sausage rolls - move him on.

According to Jesse Hogan from The Age, Newton has come off our Senior List due to Luke Tapscott's return from the Long Term Injury List.

I was speaking to someone at the club earlier this year, and i think there are thoughts to try and develop him into second ruckman to Jamar. He is not as big as Jamar but has the capacity to get bigger muscle wise. What brings him down mostly is his goal kicking, so as a second ruckman, he wont be wasting the oppurtunities. Thoughts?

Sounds a lot like last-ditch to me. Kind of like what you do when you make a midfielder who's peaked, into a tagger. He's got a number of player behind him that are going to be gaining at a rate of knots pretty soon. Gawn, Fitzpatrick, or Meesen and PJ if by some miracle they keep them.

I think we have given Newton plenty of opportunities and have just about tried to develop him in every possible position. He has 8 weeks to prove that he can play as a second ruck. If he dominates and somehow becomes Dean Cox 2.0, then he might get a one year contract, but given how many other players are already out of contract at seasons' end, I'd say Newton would be wedged on the to do list somewhere between Meesen and Bell.

Your right he has, & size as well. But thats not to say a player can come on & surprise all of us. This season is not over Yet.

Trying Newton as a second ruck is a good idea. As it currently stands he is not going to make it as a forward and is likely to be considered for delisting. If he turns out to show ability as a second ruck then we've gained something for nothing. It would make him more valuable than Meesen, PJ and Miller and, for the sake of depth of talls, I doubt we'd delist all four.

A kid? He's all of a year younger than Newton.

I don't think it's a matter of finding a second string - I think it's a matter of finding a first. And a mobile second ruckman who can push forward is not something we are overly burdened with.

I think it's difficult to discount the possibility entirely when he's never really played that role at AFL level and he appears to have been very impressive at VFL level.
