Colin Garland - free kicks

Featured Replies

The last few weeks since NM have been dogs for Garland. He consistently gives away reckless and unnecessary free kicks.

Pushing guys in the back (see Carlton) when they are not near the ball, blatantly chopping on 1 on 1's, visibly grabbing opp jumpers. In the AFL today defenders have zero advantage and as such simply must be as wary of free kicks as possible

I'm not making accusations of "career over" like some did of JR on 'ology, but CG isn't in our best 22 and could do with some technique coaching and reps in the VFL.

thoughts?

Agreed, I've been thinking this over the last few weeks as well.

His skills, decision making and overall intensity really seem to be lacking at the moment. And it seems to be that he makes poor decisions at costly moments which highlight his poor form for me.

Warnock gave away a few absolutely shockers on the weekend as well

I posted something similar in another thread. He seems to give away a lot of frees doing defender type things -- pushing in the back, high tackles etc, and it usually comes off the back of his own good work to remain in the contest. It's disappointing, and hopefully something he's working on.

I'm still happy to keep him in the side though.

Definitely agree re Garland. He had a grace period there after an interrupted pre-season, played a couple of okay games but his last fortnight has been ordinary.

Another one who needs to believe in himself more and show some controlled agression at the man and ball.

Too laconic for my liking at the moment!

He's been out of hte game for a year. It's not just a matter of recapturing the form he had before his injuries, there is also the matter of the high-speed rule changes being handed out by the AFL. Once upon a time a player could sit out a year and come back to find the umpires calling things the same way as when he left. Not anymore. He has to come to terms with the new "interpretations" that may not have applied when he last played.

Garland needs to stop supporting the Greens and start supporting some feral party like the Libs. Alternatively, place a cracker up his rear and light it 5 minutes before kick off.

I actually feel a little sorry for Garland - he's come from a long way back and missed a heck of alot of football over the past 18 months. IMO he is still getting his fitness and feel for the game back as it can't have been easy to be thrust back in to the side without any real pre-season or even time in the twos.

Not worried in the slightest about him. If he goes back to Casey for a few weeks then so be it but he is still young and his best footy is still ahead of him.

Garland is giving away unnecessary free kicks and not offering the drive and sure handling that he showed pre-injury. Still has anyone actually dominated him? I cant recall him having his opponent kick more than a couple of goals? Although I may be wrong.

If the libs are feral what the hell is Rudd & Gillard? anyhow, lets not get in to that...... the cracker part is spot on. i really like Garland and i do think he gets some slack for performances due to his lack of footy over the past 12 months, but he really is playing like a cat. He got punched twice in the Port game and just took it like a punching bag. Time to fire up Col.

I have the up most confidence he will find his way. Considering what he's come back from

and the amount of footy he has missed. To virtually slot back into senior footy and although admittedly

make some stupid mistakes he has performed exceptionally from such a interuppted preperation.

This player is class just think what he'll be able to do with a pre season. I'm sure I saw him playing on Garlett

on the weekend and no one can say he got the better of him.

I like Garland too. I just felt annoyed towards the end of the Carlton match when he had 2 goals kicked on him by 'steady eddie' then moped around like he had dropped his mobile. Come on Col! a bit of passion, please!

(PS Rudd wouldn't get a game in my favourite pollies of all time - nor would the 'mad monk' for that matter.)

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
