A question for those out there withe better memories than mine.

What was Nick Riewoldt's early career at the Saints like?

Early on he had a light build and ran up the ground, also may have had Fraser Gehrig as the key forward to relive pressure and of course Kosi.

Any comparision here?

Theres a fair bit more to it however IMO Trengove is a footballer. NN is not, and won't be. I'll throw out the SANFL final winning mark that Trengove took in defense backing into a pack as an example. NN will be exposed through-out his career. I'd hate to be in the side that's constantly covering for his footballing deficiencies around the ground. He'll be a good centre square ruck though.

in riewoldt's first year he had gherig, loewe, hall and kosi. watts has bate and green, it will be too hard to start him as a KPF in my opinion

The only reason I said NicNat is that he is a walking talking advantage for your side.

He gets the ball forward and to advantage and you can always find other players to make up for his lack of class and make use of that advantage.

In any case, Watts will also be one of those players that are exceptionally rare.

In terms of list composition we'd find we had too many ruckmen (already an issue) and still no one to play KPF.

Capable ruckmen are much harder to find that a player like Watts.

NN, Is just a BIG Dread-locked FREAK, wit no football ability, on the other hand Jack Watts IMO he is poise and class, a very good kicking style, not like NN who just throws it on the boot, Gentlemen we will have the better footballer in the end...

Nick Nat having NO football ability, I find that hard to believe. He didnt go second in the draft for nothing. He will become a good player. Where as Watts will become a fantastic player for MFC.

stop being a sook, im just replying to a big mouth, FWIW JW will never be the player NN is, NN is going to be a once in a generation player,if i was BP i wouldv taken JW because his Victorian,JW will be a great player but NN is one out of the box,if we took NN hed looking for a way home after this season, Watts the point.

For me Jack Watts is suffering at VFL level, some players just don't look any good at that this level. They need the afl intensity to compete at their potential. I watched alot of VFL footy last year and if you said to me Rohan Bail would play at afl level and play well I would of laughed, but that step up in intensity help him to improve his game and I think it will for Jack too.

I agree about Bail, he looks much better at AFL level than in the VFL. The football is much different in the VFL, generally more crowded and contested (smaller grounds and poorer playing surfaces contribute to this) and it simply doesn't suit some players.

One other question I'm interested in though - would people trade Trengove straight up for Naitanui?

It's irrelevant whether I think it ended up with us getting one and not the other.

It's early days, yes, but as much as NicNat would be awesome fun and would mean 5000 more memberships a year (a fact not lost on me)... we can't lose focus now, we want a premiership. And an A++ midfield is the way to get there. Well, ONE of the ways.

Given where Melbourne are at, I think I would lean toward Trengove. While I expect that Naitanui on his best day will be more influential than Trengove on his best day, I also have a feeling that Trengove will produce consistently great performances whereas Naitanui will produce the occasional remarkable performance, but also sometimes go insighted, particularly as clubs begin to figure out ways to minimize his influence as Trident pointed out. He has an advantage right now -a bit like Davey when he first came in, but to an even greater extent- in that opposition coaches don't know how to counter him because they've simply never come across anything like him before. That'll change.

Going into a Grand Final, I would hope for a great performance from NickNat, but I would know I was getting one from Trengove.

Good post, Dan. I agree. Trengove will be a classy player for many years to come. NicNat will be good to watch in patches. Jack will give you consistent, solid footy and that actually underrates what I think of Trenners. He'll be an absolute gun and although difficult to say, better for us than a NicNat.

Hmm. I reckon that's impossible to say. Kangaroos had one, and now look at them. When he was playing what were their memberships like? Are we comparing to other clubs of the time? Grading on a curve?

If Brendan Gale is to believed, 75,000 is possible within this generation of players. If THAT'S true, then 7500 seems a small number.

Personally I think good footy, and playing deep into finals many years running will be what makes the membership numbers climb dramatically. Watts will be a part of that. On his own he wouldn't make much difference. It's the team.

That said, I think Jaded put it best back when we were all looking at NicNat and Watts. People were citing his individuality as a big reason why he would rake the fans in. She said wait and see what the next 195cm Blond 60-80 goal a year forward will do to crowds. Said it all really.
