I agree, we do need a key forward in the team, and our forward line needs improving.

BUT, we are dealing with injuries. We have at least 4-5 strong forward options out of the team with injury! I don't any team in the afl could be a strong forward line with that many forwards out. See how StKilda do with one forward option out.

In 4 weeks time, I think our forward line will look like this: (with Jurrah to be added to this forward set up later in the year)

Green, Bate, Sylvia

Watts, Pettard, Wonaeamirri

...also chuck through Bennell, Morton

Our forward line today:

Green, Newton, Dunn

Bate, Pettard, Bennell

With Jones running through there.

Thats IN: Sylvia, Watts, Wona, Morton.... OUT: Newton, Dunn'

Those additions will make us MUCH more dangerous up forward. Honestly don't know how anyone can expect us to kick 15 goals a game with Newton and Dunn as our main forwards.

Next week Sylvia should return with Rivers. Martin kicked three for Casey and he is a better option both up forward and supporting Jamar in the ruck, than Newton. Bit of work for the first time for the selectors.

i watched the game at casey last nite, JW played very well, when the balls around hes knees he pretty good ,hes ready to walk into our side, hes disposals first class for a boy his size, its time for him to step up.

Yeh the signs were good, I felt for the first time he really seemed to be picking up the pace of the game. Presented particularly well and gave them a lot of drive, especially in the second half, decision-making and disposal very good (even in traffic & under pressure) and once or twice sublime. One piece of play he led up past the wing to receive a kick out of defence, baulked around the guy on his mark, then a perfectly-weighted kick over about 40m to a teammate with an opponent right on his hammer who hardly had to break stride, which led to a goal. And he seems to be working out how to put his draft-camp pace-off-the-mark & agility to advantage during a game, backed himself a few times. Uncharacteristically missed some gettable goals though. IMO if he had another week or two at Casey he'd be even better for it.

But Martin was very good too, in the air and on the ground, very lively, again missed some he could have got, could have easily had 5 or 6 instead of 3. We saw last year a few of the 'fringe' players go back to Casey for a week or two and then perform much better when they came back to the Dees, can see the same happening to Stef over the next few weeks. He'll probably be needed against Brisbane because Jamar will need some help against their rucks.

After a good game against Collingwood where Melbourne played man-on-man and left players in the forward line, why did Bailey revert back to not having players to kick it to up forward?

During the Before the Bounce session a very good reason was put forward for why this wouldve eventuated, but as I did sign a confidentiality agreement...

All I can do is recommend signing up for it. Very enlightening in terms of the tactics employed and the games within a game.

I can understand your frustration, you are NOT alone.

Hmm, I don't think that was Bailey's doing. Adelaide insist on playing a terrible brand of football when they come to the MCG. It's not just against us. They always have 1-2 extra players down back, and the Melbourne players that are on those players don't want to enter the 50 so as not to flood our own forward line. It's pretty simple and a tactic Sydney used in 05-06. So suddenly, whenever they get the ball out they stream forward, bringing our players with them. When/if we rebound from our defensive 50, we have no one up forward.

Both coaches were as bad as each other in playing defensively and both sides continually coughed the ball up in the middle with over-possession of the ground because there were no options inside 50 to kick to.

Excellent points you raise- I see this as well.However I feel Gawn will also play a massive role in our forward line.But I still would like us to pick up at least a couple more Talls..

I would love to think that Wonna will be with us for the long term, but really, it's just not going to happen. Too many injuries.
