Proposed Liam Jurrah Banner

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have been thinking of making a banner to hold up at games whenever the Warlpiri Wizard astounds us.

The school I attended (Mt Evelyn Christian School) has a community partnership with Yuendumu. Through this partnership we had the opportunity to spend a few days in Yuendumu on a school camp in Year 10. We also spent 6 months learning the Warlpiri language. I don't remember a whole lot of warlpiri, but one word that has stuck in my mind, is the warlpiri word "wara" (pronounced Waa-Raa)

The word "wara" translates to "Wow!!"

My proposal therefore is for a banner saying "Wara Jurrah!"

I thought he might get a kick out of seeing a banner written in Warlpiri.

However, I have neither the skill nor resources to produce such a banner, hence I am wondering whether there is anyone involved in the cheer squad that likes the idea enough to run with it....

What about "Wara Warlpiri Warrior"? Sounds catchier to me.

I'm not the biggest fan of "Warlpiri Warrior" as a nick name, but that's just me.

"Wara Jurrah" is short and sweet.

Hell, I'm happy simply with "Wara!"

What about this as a Banner: -

Love that!

Air Jurrah would be great.

"Jurrah-wara"

Like your idea of the Warlpiri words, very respectful.

Great idea. I would go for either just 'Wara!!' or 'Jurrah Wara!!'

Also would like to see a 'liquid football' banner in the cheer squad, referring to the Alan Partridge-Jurrah video on Youtube. But thats a different story.

Again, great idea Rosso.

Not sure about the video you're on about, but I agree a simply banner with just "Wara" or "Jurrah Wara" would be best.

Its a homage to him and his heritage. No need to complicate things.

That 'Air Jurrah' is Amazing!!! I would love to see that on a banner!

I also like 'Jurrahcane'

'Juzz time'

I'm glad that's the letter U and not the letter I.

I think the banner should be that Air Jurrah pic with some walpiri words under it.

Someone HAS to make the Air Jurrah one!

Rosso,

I'll work on it and when you see it held up next season please take full credit for the idea.

As for the "Air Jurrah"...that's a bit more involved...I'll see if I can get it happening too.

Any other ideas are always welcome.

Thanks man, that would be awesome!

The other idea I've been toying with is including his skin name on a banner.

Liam's skin name is Jungarrayi, I'm sure he would get a real kick out of seeing Jungarrayi on a banner.

For those interested: Warlpiri culture divides people into different social

groups, which are known as ‘skin groups’, each group has

a known set of relationships that determine responsibilities and obligations to the other groups. Skin relationships and responsibilities keep Warlpiri people and country running smoothly.

(For those who want to read more, a very thorough explanation of the Warlpiri skin name system is contained in section 3.1 of:
