Pick 34 - Will We Or Wont We

Recommended Posts

Just to clear up any confusion.

Current state of play: 5 vacancies on the senior list, created by Robertson, Whelan, Wheatley, McLean and Buckley. That gives us access to:

Pick 1

Pick 2

Pick 11

Pick 18

Pick 34 OR PSD Pick 1

We've got three players presently uncontracted: Bartram, McNamara and Cheney. Bartram and McNamara have allegedly been offered new contracts (though there's no concrete evidence to suggest this is fact); if we assume that is true, and we also take as given that we want to keep PSD 1 for that "just in case" scenario, then BBP's assertion that it's now a choice between Pick 34 and Cheney is correct. That is a lot of ifs and buts though.

My preference would be to delist one more and use Pick 34, and keep PSD1 up our sleeve.

Well explained Nasher.

If it was up to me I'd delist Bartram in a heart beat. So many more positives associated with Cheney and McNamara. Bartram has had his turn, and hasn't shown enough for mine.

What's sad is, if we do want to use 34, one of those 3 may be forced off the list whilst we keep Newton, Bell, Dunn and PJ. I go on about that, but it does really annoy me.

Of course we should!

How the hell are Hughes, Zomer and Healey still on the couch when we have pick34 to gamble with..Get em off!

I dunno....maybe because they're rookies? Just throwing it out there.

You might even find that the decision won't be made till draft day...

BP would most likely have a list of players who he rates as better than Cheney / Bartram / T Mac... if one of them slips through to 34, we pick them up... if they don't, then we pass and keep the above players on our list...

No. Players have to be delisted before you have the pick. The empty spots on the list give you the picks.

I think if we wait that long to give a contract, they may walk.

If it was my decision I would be thinking whether Pick 34, in this compromised draft, would be worth more than Batram.

And, all things considered, it's a hard decision but I would politely move on Clint and take a kid who can kick at 34.

I guess we will know soon enough...

They'd have to be told be Saturday (the 31st) wouldn't they? Given that's the day their contract ends

This discussion is going on in another thread, and I can understand why.

It's a strange industry and the numerous list lodgements mean that there are a few periods where clubs re-evaluate and move people on, or give contracts.

We may be waiting for Ball to commit one way or another before moving on one of our uncontracted.

But I am certain that there will be players on Nov 1 unsure whether their club will give them a contract.

Is there a really obvious reason that I'm missing (probably because of the 1000s of words uni is asking of me at present) as two why clubs can't overflow their list on draft day and then cull pre-listed players from there?

I don't know why you technically couldn't (beside the fact that it's probably against the rules), but why would you want to? It's not exactly doing right by your existing players. I reckon the AFLPA would make a lot of noise if clubs did that.

10 November is the deadline for listed but uncontracted players to nominate for the draft. The fact that our three uncontracted players - Bartram,Cheney and McNamara - might be listed this Friday doesn't necessarily mean that we are going to keep them. [ I think they are the 3 ?]

Friday is a key date for the rookies

List lodgement 2 on 10 November will determine how many picks we have in the primary draft. We'll have to wait until then to know whether picks 34 and 50 are going to be open

November 18 is the" Luke Ball deadline". If he doesn't nominate for that, then we'll know to pass up our final draft pick so that a space is available for Ball at PSD #1.

It'll be a while yet before we know our final draft strategy

By 10 November we'll know whether Ball is going somewhere else or it's just St.Kilda or Melbourne.

If he doesn't nominate for the ND on 10 November, St.Kilda wont delist him so the 18 November deadline is meaningless - they'd prefer to keep him or see him at MFC (via the PSD) rather than a current flag competitor.

This really belongs in the Ball thread.

I'm sure you will ensure that Bartram gets delisted given your standing within MFC.

Hightower, have you ever seen Mr Cuthbertson play?

Hoopla, you have suddenly become very active on these forums. You date back from the time of Checker Hughes rather than the fullback Danny Hughes and your 2nd least liked Daniel Hughes so you have seen it all happen at MFC but now you are wielding your opinion and giving only a small piece of your inside information -why not give the Demonland forum all of your inside info. I believe that you would be a great addition to the MFC board as you know it all.

Darren - I'm about as close to the Board as you are to life membership

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc.
