Well put. He is a clubman, and should be remembered as a guy who forged a good career for himself and wound up one of our best forwards. He won us many games off his own boot, and when we played finals this decade he was a key reason. Can I also point out he is the 5th highest goal scorer in our club's long history, and is only 4 goals off overtaking one Garry Lyon. That is a fantastic achievement for someone who worked his way into the team lateish, off the rookie list, and also isnt the biggest bloke going around.

It is a fantastic achievement. Although right now he's putting himself in a bad light with his lack of effort on the field and almost refusal to assist and come to the aid of his teammates at Casey. He should work hard and runout what little he has left of his football career, so he can hold his head high.

You people should show some respect before turning on your own. Yes his career is close to an end, but that shouldnt discredit all he did for us for the last 10 years! The same thing happened when White, Yze etc retired, and frankly it makes me sick. You lot are f*cking pathetic. Mods should ban the lot of you!

If Robbo can learn to do the 1%'s quickly he won't be discredited. For his sake I hope he does this and returns before seasons end. It would be awful to think he would continue the way he has of late until the end. He needs to step up to the plate - for his sake.

Don't get me wrong, Robbo has been one of my favorite players but his time has passed and I'm hoping whoever takes his place is even better.

I think he is equating people's views who think the club shouldn't go out of its way to only win one more game, with a lack of desire to do what needs to be done to try and win a flag.

I'd like to make one point about Robbo, and I must stress that it's from an outsider perspective. The Dees don't seem overendowed with ex-players retaining close involvement with the club after they retire, and on the contrary a number of them seem to have left on less than ideal terms and even feel quite negatively towards the club. Now this is just an impression, not based on anything resembling facts, it's not something I can back up. Jimma has done a great job getting some of them back this year (most obvious example being Lyon), but considering the great history of this club, we of all clubs should be doing a lot better in respecting those who have gone before.

So it's important IMO that from now on, people like Robbo (who has given so much over his playing career, on & off the field) and others like him continue to remain connected in some way. Same applies to those like Junior & Whelan - Whelan seems to have been a great support to the younger indigenous players, which is why he needs to stay around after he retires too.

Some of DB's recent pronouncements about Robbo, plus Peter German's overly gracious review of Robbo's game on Saturday, make me think that they see it this way too. I get the feeling DB has left Robbo in no doubt that he's not part of the plans in 2010, but wants him to stay on good terms. If it means we have to be patient with a few sulks from Robbo until his farewell game, then considering all he's done for the club it's a tiny price to pay to keep him around after his playing career finishes.

this has been a sticking point with many supporters for too long now

BUT IS BEING ADRESSED BY THE CURRENT ADMIN. & FOOTY DEPT. FOR THE FUTURE .!!

they are very aware of a lack of respect given certain retiring players up to now.

there has not been due diligence taken previously.

EXCEPT for the well known champs.in the team of century of course.

i was at a meeting recently where this point was made by a high level footy dept.member.

and his comments were that-melb. has not performed well with their retiring players and a more comprehensive respect to said players will take place.

as for previous players not returning to club i can only surmise that some previous administrations were too pompous and haughty and too supercilious for their own good.

i remember when that t--d "bill guest "referred to rank and file supporters as "PLEBS"

and did not deserve the right to vote..when the merger was on.

for an example;

gerard healy's name came up AT this meet; and the story goes that during his tenure at melb. he was promised life membership with the "MCC.."

but when the mcc realised he was going to the swans, the" mcc". renegged on the life membership.

gerards nose was out of joint so much so, he said if u r going to act like that >>u can all get ?????

THIS administration is the best we have had since 64..

one of the current board members who had been a supporter(lawyer and finance wiz with own business) all his life & had no intention joining up..

BUT AFTER A 5 MIN CHAT WITH JIMMY HE AGREED TO DO ALL HE COULD.

this time last year they had trouble putting a side on the field..let alone have success.

in a short 12 months they have garnered repect from the afl wherby the afl returns their phone calls..

-thats right not necessarily done so with previous admins.-

garnered support to the tune of 3 million in the one night.( never before achieved by any other club)

and starteing to show real promise with corporate support and donation of time as well as money.

i am sure robbo. and any and all who follow will get the correct recognition from jimbo and his merry men.

He has a history of making ridiculous and dumb comments in the naive belief that he is a "media player". His recent comments about in the Hun online about Carlton in R22 were inept and does little for the Club that he apparently "bleeds red and blue for".

Leoncelli, Neitz, Ingerson, Lyon, Stynes are just some of the quick ones off the top of my head that are still around / involved.

I don't particularly care if Brent Grgic or Darren Kowal are involved in the club.

Excellent post, although I prefer to think that ignorance shows out rather than silencing these critics. Robbo, has been a wonderful player for us, I think that he has been one of the best half forward flankers we have produced and has also been the heart and soul of the club over a fairly turbulent period. During that time he has learnt to kick and constantly been played in key position roles to which he is unsuited. In short he made the best of his abilit. Rather than criticise his lack of chasing, perhaps some of his teammates could have supported him better in this regard. Yes, this could be his final year, but you treasure these players who have not quite reached the heights of Barrassi. Flower or Lyons

I do. I think the club is merely treating them with the respect they deserve, but I'm not entirely sure this hasn't been done with other players in the past.

The issue with bagging players before their careers are finished... as long as they are on the list and playing they will be open to criticism, and rightly so.

Purely because they have performed well in the past does not mean weak performances will be accepted or that pity contracts will be given.

But obviously, this is not the position the club should be taking in public, merely behind closed doors.

I would have thought Liam Jurrah puts more fear in opposition backman than a "Me first" forward with little or no defensive efforts.

The only reason for even entertaining this thought this is that their premiership "window" is probably 2009-2011, and they have some key players (Johnno, Aker, Hudson, Eagleton) who probably have only a season or two left at the most. And their lack of key forwards of any description is what made them look so bad against the Saints, especially because Welsh is on his last chance. They can't bridge the gap between them & Saints/Cats unless they get a forward target. This is surely all that's driving their interest in Hall, but there will be too much opposition from within the club. Robbo could be an attractive consolation prize, with no apparent downside to those outside this club, who would be there to just attract the best defender, straighten them up, etc etc for no more than the next year or two until Ayce Cordy or someone can take over. We definitely couldn't expect a lot for him, but you never know. He may well do better with the service he'd get from their midfield too.
