Setanta O'hAilpin- New Head of Irish Relations

Setanta O'hAilpin today retired from the Carlton football club due to personal/attitude problems.

He consequently was offered a position as Head of Irish relations as the Melbourne Football Club. This role involves helping Melbourne recruit Irish young stars from Ireland. I think this is great news.

The below article explains:

Setanta O'hAilpin Retires

Greg Denham| November 7th 1:32PM

Blues tall utility Setanta O’hAilpin today announced his retirement from football due to attitude problems.

O’hAilpin, 25, was told by specialists this week that he should retire from all forms of sport, such was the condition of his attitude.

Dr Jason Barnes described O’hAilpin’s attitude problem as being the “degeneration of the mind as a result of previous mental problems when he was young”.

O’hAilpin, who told his teammates of his decision before training earlier this week, thanked the club for the opportunities he’d been given since being drafted.

“My attitude has not held up to the rigours of being on an AFL list and has degenerated rapidly,” O’hAilpin explained. “I have seen specialists in Sydney and Melbourne and all the medical professionals are telling me to stop playing football to prevent further serious damage to the brain.

“I love the club, I’ve made a lot of friendships and I’ll always be thankful for the experiences over the last four-and-half years at the Carlton Football Club. But unfortunately I won’t be able to continue to pursue my dream of playing AFL.

O’hAilpin was drafted in the rookie draft in 2003 as a long-term project from Ireland. After strong performances in the VFL for the Northern Bullants O’Hailpin was placed on Carlton's senior list in 2006.

This year was his fifth year at the club and managed a total of 46 games and 18 goals.

High Performance Manager Justin Cordy said the club felt for O’hAilpin.

“We’re disappointed for Setanta because he’s an outstanding young man,” Cordy said. “He has worked really hard with the entire coaching staff to develop as a Key Backman.

“The decision he’s made is out of absolute necessity to give himself the best chance of being able to live an active life in the future so we certainly wish him well.”

O’hAilpin immediately after announcing his retirement expressed his interest in working in the International Relations sector of a AFL club. The Melbourne Football Club today announced the appointment of Setanta O’hAilpin as head of Irish relations. This position will benefit the Melbourne Football Club immensely and will allow them to get hold of some of rare Irish talent. O’hAilpin said: “I am very excited about my appointment and hopefully I can bring down some top Irish talent to the Melbourne Football Club.

President Jim Stynes was extremely pleased with the signing of Setanta. “I am looking very forward to Setanta getting some Irish talent down to the club as I as a fellow Irishmen would love for the club to get hold of some Irish talent.

Stynes hinted at the fact to recruit key position prospects.

Setanta will start his job as of next week.

good news i reckn! what are your thoughts?

Great news. People have often complained that we're behind other clubs because they're overseas and were not, this puts us right up there with Collingwood & Sydney in terms of finding talent in Ireland.

Do you have a link to that article?

That is a very interesting move... obviously very smart off the field, not quite switched on, on the field... some strange statements in that article! if that is infact true, jeez Jimmy jumped on him quick! It's obviously been in the works for a while

Yeah, is there a link to this article.

"attitude problem" was the cause for retirement?

Go figure.

I can't belive some people think this is not true. It was announced on SEN last night. I think its a great move by the club. He is a young man and hopefully O'hAilpin will be able to recruit a talented irishman in the near future.

Quite convenient that the link you provided failed....

Also i just noticed, you posted at 1:26pm and the article is listed as being 1:32pm?!? Is that you Greg?

I think you just helped prove that it's a crock. Greg Denham writes for the Age, but the Australian website is linked to News.com.au, which is part of the Herald Sun stable not Fairfax

What's the difference between a gold fish and a mountain goat?

Answer: Gold fish muck around in fountains.

Cheers

Does this mean that there's no such thing as Setanta? :(

What will we tell the kids.. :(

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
