Green is set to sign a two year deal next week, with a condition for a 3rd season. watch this space

Interesting. With the calibre of players on the list at present, he'd be on a reasonable wicket with this coming contract one would assume - if this mail is legitimate. Timing is everything as they say.....

What I am saying is htis - by the time 2010 rolls around the players contracts will be bigger than they are right now (they grow with CBA, etc). So, even if we did pay Brad that amount of money - when 2010 comes players as you mentioned will be entilted to more $$.

FWIW - I doubt for one second that CC would mention to a reporter how much any player was looking to get in a new contract. Its all pure speculation.

The cap increase from 09-11 will be approx. $520k (around 6.5% of the cap). You are absolutely right about Green's wage being swallowed by the increase, but that doesn't allay my concern over having a massive contract for a fringe player in 2011. I'm not even willimg to give that clause that BB was discussing, things change quickly in footy, as White can tell you, he was a stalwart, undroppable until he was dropped and became an expensive list clogger.

And for that one second of doubt you have, here is the article that mentions CC's remarks.

Jeff White and Adam Yze cut saves Demons about $1m

I have heard the same deal is close to being agreed.

And I think the 18 game is just part of two-or-three clauses.

Brad has probably had 2 career best years in a row while the side has been utter crepe and I'd be very happy to see him given a 2 year extension plus an option for a third if conditions are met. The club needs to protect itself from repeating past mistakes. In 2 years Brad will be on the decline and hopefully our youngsters will be going past him.

How does renumeration work if the optional third year is taken up in these contracts, does anyone know? Is the pay based on this contract or renegotiated at the end of the 2 year period?

he shouldn't be offered any more that he is on though- because then we will have salary cap room when it icnreases over the enxt couple of years.

If there is an option, and I have no information that there is or there isn't, it will be the same as the first two years.

1m over 2 years with an option for a third at $500k.

I'm for standing our ground on two years.

Still heard nothing official. Was anything mentioned at the B&F? Only a couple of days till trade week.

From what I can make out Green, Moloney, Dunn and Bell haven't signed contracts for next year.

Moloney is a required player. Green & Bell would be my second out of those to jeep

but for the other 3 than moloney- if anything good came along, i'd trade

BigFooty's Nudge BeeDee says Brad still hasn't signed and is looking elsewhere.

He's going to Port with Aaron for Pick 4

Watts and Natanui?Vickery?Rich?

Sourced or speculation?

The Australian has a piece on a possible trade today, apparently Brad is seeing who wants to trade for him. We have met his terms and he just wants to see what melbourne teams are interested.

It is rather rational exercise really, we will deal with a club that meets our demands, and Brad will re-sign if we can't because he doesn't want to go into the PSD where he might go to Perth or Adelaide.

Speculation, and unlikely, but you never know, maybe it's finally our turn to have the footy gods shine on us.

Jack Watts as #1 versus Kreuzer, Murphy, Deledio, perhaps the sun is starting to shine?

i'd rather trade green than davey because of the age factor. i'd also trade miller ahead of davey. however, we really need that pick 4 or another top 10 pick. would help us out aLOT

TRADE HIM

Has been offered a 3-year contract and still wants to fish! Bait him up in a package to get us that top 10 Pick! Port, Essendon and Carlton should all be interested.

I agree.

In the good tradition of trading, there is probably a good case to take the 3 yrs off the table, given he is not rushing to sign, preferring to keep testing the water. Back to 2 yrs, not negotiable. Looks like MFC played tough guy for weeks, relented, only to be stood up. If you're gonna play the game, play it to the end.

Looks to me like we are the safety net. NO. Play tough; 2 yrs, not negotiable. Even if he walks in the PSD, he will be the [censored]. How's he gonna hold his head up; will look a dithering fool.

MFC, do it. <_<

Totally agree with your thoughts. Back to 2 years!

You know, if Green is worth say a pick around the 20 mark, & davey, maybe around say pick 13, I'd rather combine them not for one pick of say 4, but I'd prefer to get something like a package of pick 8 + 26 from the Tiges or 9 & 27 from the Roos. This would give us more talent spread with high quality & also multiplies the chances of fluking a superstar.

Pick order 1 - 27

1 - Melbourne

2 - West Coast

3 - Fremantle

4 - Port Adelaide

5 - Essendon

6 - Carlton

8 - Richmond

9 - North Melbourne

Looking at the spread of picks. Andrew Lovett if he goes to another club, Essendon I'd imagine would be getting another pick anywhere from 12-27. Now it could be a straight swap for O'Keefe (maybe with exchange of picks), but O'Keefe and Sydney may look elsewhere for a deal besides Essendon.

Point is Essendon may want a trade for another player. Their pick 23 may come into play........perhaps one of our players???? Any suggestions to this speculative thought??

I can imagine O'keefe going to the blues who need forwards for pick 6 + a player.

I don't know if the Dons would want to give up pick 5 for a 28 yr old when they need to rebuild.

But do you think the Blues will give up 6 for O'Keefe and 24 for Warnock and forget about the draft until the third round (pick 41)?

I didn't say the Dons would give up pick 5. They would get a pick in return for Lovett (ie say pick 22 from Port for example). They would then have 5,22,23,... .

My point is they may use that pick 22, on forward it for say Colin Sylvia (god forbid not)....

Leaving us, 1,17,19,22,35,51,67.

i think the blues will give up there picks for o'keefe and warnock definitely. they are probably in a position where they can top up after scooping the draft pool for the last 4-5 years!!!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
