Post Match Discussion - Round 17
Straight Sets Simon replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
As miserable about Melbourne as I am it's no coincidence that we are struggling to kick goals when two of our three top forwards going into the year haven't played a game. I realise it's all hypothetical however if Clark and Hogan were playing this year things would look a lot different and Dawes would be far more effectual. -
Yes, but if every little decision is paid then think of how many of those little decisions will not be paid becuase an umpire is blind-sided or it happens very quickly.
-
I thought that in the first four or so rounds the umpires seemed to be letting more go and were only paying the really obvious decisions. This is good becuase by doing this they are far more likely to be consistent. If they are paying every little soft decision then as soon as they miss one of these (which will happen becuase of the nature of the game) then all of the sudden they are inconsistent. Umpires will never be 100% consistent but I believe that by only paying the obvious ones they will be far more consistent.

Both of these resulted in goals to Hawkins. This is what annoys me about umpiring, the inconsistency when the same thing would happen later in the game and a free kick would be paid.

It never was. -
Not anymore. They have struggled to even get enough players to train over the past two years.

He is far smaller since he broke his collarbone. -

As I have said all along, it's 90% recruiting and 10% development. -

I stopped watching the delayed replay before half-time. I didn't see any of the game last week and was much happier. Melbourne are terrible. Geelong are good. The umpires need to be investigated. -

I would still love JKH in there as well. -
Toumpas not playing is not tanking.

Luke Tapscott, the forgotten man.

His straight line running is good, his lateral movement is terrible. -
Something that I have been banging on about for a while now is that Melbourne players are too slow to turn around and get quickly back behind the mark. This means they can't react quickly enough to the quick option and play on if that is the best option.

Seriously? Whelan bumped him in the side and Hird was over the ball. Long bumped Simmonds in the head and he wasn't even near the ball.
-
It was just a gutless bump, no matter the situation.
-
It's easily one of the most gutless and sickening bumps I've seen. Troy Simmonds can't remember the day.

Jetta is a massive loss, expect Ballantyne to kick a bag. -

This is from the MRP: "Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Lance Franklin and Gold Coast’s Clay Cameron from the second quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Cameron has the ball and is preparing to kick when Franklin comes towards him. As the Gold Coast player disposes of the ball, Franklin meets him with a bump. A free kick downfield was paid at the time for the high contact and it was the view of the panel that the high contact in the bump was below the force required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was required." Franklin didn't even get cited. -

Hang on, a few weeks ago Goodes and Franklin got off because there was no injury to their opponents did they not? Was the Western Bulldogs player injured? Here is the Franklin bump, it's just the inconsistency that I do not understand. -

Terlich and Georgiou I don't mind as they are more senior players but Toumpas and Trengove I agree with. The interesting thing is they are both painfully slow yet looked quick in the SANFL. -

From the little I did see that Jetta free kick and fifty metre penalty which gifted Melbourne a goal was putrid. Wayne Carey was getting stuck into the number 32 umpire on the radio during the call. -

I've only seen snippets but Watts is looking classy, is that fair?
