Kayo is 4K in 2024
Apparently the rights are due for re-negotiation around June. Even if non exclusive Fox/Kayo will be desperate to keep them given their lack of summer product. Kayo is fast becoming a six month service with a little bit extra of F1. Its cricket is good but it's not enough to underwrite the summer season. Their saviour would be quality soccer

Ed Langdon the (Inside) Midfielder
Playing the wing (aka boundary) is old school. Definitely time to play the angles. Corridor is turn over territory. Quick movement on angles of 45 degrees plus is where it's at

Digital Membership
No geo restrictions at present. Only a limit on screens at any one time. Murdoch sold Foxtel (including Kayo) to Dazn last month. I

Digital Membership
Are you sure? Kayo upped its monthly price recently so I suspect they all went up. As I recall last year most clubs were within $20 or so of each other but I could be wrong. When you pull it apart they're just selling you Kayo so I suppose some clubs may put on a higher mark up

The Value Of Practice Matches
Pre-season matches (particularly when there were three) added to the rhythm of the season. The first match saw the fringe and young players building up to the inclusion of the elite players in the second and third matches. Now we have Round Zero, rolling byes and a VFL fixture that is dysfunctional. Modern fixturing seems not so much over exposure but more like an ever present blanket smoke filling the vacuum. And next year we have an NFL game probably in the first week of finals. Bread and circuses for all.

Training Ground?

There's always Darts. Having watched a few minutes I could believe there's scope for AFLX

Kayo is 4K in 2024
Kayo's price going up by $5. $35 a month is now $40 You could see it coming but just as NRL and AFL start it's a bit in your face At least they haven't done the Netflix trick of geo-limitation and thus eliminating sharing across two or more contributors. Shared with another family member at $20 a month is not bad but they are slowly losing all peripheral sports.

Dangerfield Wants Shorter Quarters
My limit is around three. Often I will watch the first quarter and then dip in again for the last ten minutes if it's close. Have some friends who will watch around seven games like yourself. We now have just under 200 games excluding finals. Considering that few overlap that's a lot of broadcast content.
-
Dangerfield Wants Shorter Quarters
Start games at 7pm. That sees them finished before 10pm. I would not look at quarter lengths but I would be prepared to consider stoppage time. Ball ups would be the first to go and while you're at it get rid of nominated rucks.

KOZZY A DEMON FOR LIFE!!!
Unfortunately not At best a top 10 and a late first or early second

The Roy George Thread
Good luck Roy His first game for Casey was phenomenal. The next one or two were forgettable. Mind you Casey were often so bad in 2024 it was hard to gauge form even if you were playing in the backline. The big plus is that his ability to score multiple goals per game at lower levels has been exhibited on a number of occasions. With a rigorous fitness regime he may just make it into AFL. Good luck to him

Oscar Allan
Restricted Free Agent... Whatever anyone offers will be matched Eagles have to spend their money somewhere May be up for a trade if a club offers a seven plus year deal at big dollars The same article mentions Tom De Konig... (now there's a sought after player)

2025 Prediction
6th to 10th is my guess. I could of course be wrong and it might be better or worse. It's a very long season with around 15-16 teams capable of beating anyone. Even the also rans (Eagles and North) aren't too bad relatively speaking. Throw in more teams adopting the Ange ball philosophy and who knows.

KOZZY A DEMON FOR LIFE!!!
Yes... You can build a team around HR Koz is top quality cream

The Next CEO
CEO of an AFL club is not exactly a plum appointment. Most of the key drivers you have control over in business are absent in the AFL model. Even the Boards are more guardians than true boards of management. Revenues are fuzzy to say the least given AFL support, hard and soft caps, controlled stadiums, managed fixtures etc My guess is that we will end up with an administrator type. My first question to a candidate would be how she/he would manage a club with stagnant if not declining membership

Kayo is 4K in 2024
Makes sense in that Optus Sport was mainly a play to boost Optus mobile subscriptions. The trouble with Stan is that it follows the old Foxtel model of sport only being available if you take out the base movie/tv subscription. Definitely increases the profile of Stan if it goes ahead. As an aside interesting to see that very few if any of the NFL play off games on Kayo are in 4k. US broadcasters still in the relative stone age.

Training Ground?
The concept is akin to the jewel and its surrounds. Very popular for NFL grounds. Take an industrial site, build a stadium and then sell the surrounding land to investors who then build and lease franchised restaurants and sports bars etc to various operators. If done well you get a new entertainment complex. If done badly you have a group of uninviting windswept fast food joints attracting business maybe ten times per year. It's useful to remember that the original owners of Docklands in Melbourne lost a fortune.

Training Ground?
They are planning on building a $60M indoor training facility so they're not quite there yet. Not sure if they have a second oval which is considered de rigeur The AFL club is hoping to raise $20 million of its own to contribute to the project, while continuing to work with governments to bridge the gap for the project, with Cats CEO Steve Hocking saying the club was keen to secure more government funding to secure the project’s future. https://www.austadiums.com/news/1409/geelong-planning-new-60-million-addition-for-gmhba-stadium

The Kalani White Thread
Believe it or not but I had Collingwood as a second team back in the mid seventies. Under Tom Hafey they played a good game of football. Don't worry I saw the light in 1988 when abused by a little old lady magpie supporter for cheering a Melbourne win. Since then GWS has been my second team. For a while they were like a fantasy football league

NRL are considering offering State of Origin as a separate package for streaming companies to bid on. Like the AFL it's protected by the anti siphoning laws but Vlandys is a powerful player. We're seeing the AFL doing the same thing with "Streaming Saturdays". Gather Round is another easy target but would they dare offer the GF as a separate package. Personally I would pay say $50 for an ad free GF with bells and whistles such as alternative commentary, choice of camera angle and of course high quality sound and vision (4k minimum).

The deal is done at 7 x EBITDA (chicken feed for a digital player) but at least News and Telstra get their loans repaid. News Corp and Telstra will take a small equity position in DAZN. I suspect they would have preferred cash but perhaps they're hanging out for a bid by Saudi Arabia What does it all mean for us... who knows News Corp-controlled pay TV and streaming company Foxtel has been sold to DAZN, a sports streaming platform controlled by one of the world’s richest people, for an enterprise value of $3.4 billion. News Corp will hold a minority (6 per cent) equity interest in DAZN and gain a seat on the company’s board of directors, it said in a statement to the market. Foxtel’s current debt will be refinanced, while News Corp and Telstra’s loans to the company of $578 million and $128 million respectively, will also be paid off. https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/billionaire-backed-sports-streamer-buys-foxtel-20241216-p5kyqd.html Dazn does have worldwide rights to a lot of lower tier niche sports. If you're a follower of Bare Knuckle fighting you could be in luck !!

2024 AGM
Not as stupid as it sounds. I suspect AI analysis is already being done in sports that involve set plays such as NFL and soccer (corners, free kicks etc). AFL is far more random but someone will write a program. (Enter the moving diamond or similar)
