  1. Thanks to all contributors
  2. Without criticising any one who puts up a team. (In fact I admire the effort and knowledge that they all display) I would like to see a team selection matching and beating the opposition player. ie not just Weed at Ch
  3. The government will make the decision it seems so Casey or Docklands may still be favoured.
  4. You do make sense Macca. i am just disappointed that a Port Melbourne option has not been vigorously pursued for similar reasons. The govt seems to want to exploit that area.
  5. Tasmanian financiers should just announce that due to Covid uncertainties they will place all funding into a future fund to assist the emergence of a Tasmanian based AFL team. It will be an indicator of the financial strength of current AFL teams.
  6. Due to recent retirement notice there is no T$ but the no B$ component has always been seemingly ignored thankfully. B$ is always called out usually through insightful commentary. Many useful and more not so useful facts and ideas are unleashed and exposed in this thread . Long may it continue
  7. Leadership and captaincy are different roles and are not necessarily complementary. The captain tosses the coin and takes interviews, represents the club in official capacity. It is wise to have a captain and a vice captain to share the duties especially when one is unavailable. There may even be an opportunity to assign official roles to players eg Jetta to comment on issues relating to indigenous matters or a player to officiate in fund raising, member liasson, etc. Leadership is required in a range of situations , in a range of fashions. Again that range does not necessarily come in a single package or at a convenient time. Some leadership tasks are almost routine and can be an assigned role which is usually expected of the captain. This role can sometimes conflict with the formal dignitary role and is why the best leader is often not best titled captain. Leadership is most regularly required as an inspirational act at a significant time. Leadership obviously implies that there are followers, both roles must be understood and recognised. Leadership is often just an ability to recognise the moment that followers need leading. Melbourne captains and players have consistently failed in this aspect. I do not know enough about the structures and capacities of the club and individual players but make these comments based on information gleaned from my limited observation and comments of others in this thread. Max is a great personality as well as one of our most significant players. He can inspire through performance but being such aan apparently lighthearted positive character, can often not recognise the significance of an occasion. Viney is undoubtably inspirational with his attack on the ball, but again often is unable to recognise the significance of his actions and I think has been disappointed that others who cannot match his aggression do not follow him. His simplistic response of aggression is not always appropriate when often strategic absorbing and calmness is required. May did seem to step up and displayed real emotion and desire to lead by example. His teaching and direction seemed to increase which was a reflection of his experience and desire. Lever has always presented in match interviews as a coherent and articulate character. His on feild direction and ability to work cooperatively with May and others was positive. I have not seen any consistent performance of leadership or captaincy from any of our forwards in the last few years,( perhaps since Lyon , Schwartz, Green,) . I thought that TMac had potential but now look for the emergence from our list. Trac definitely seems to have taken the next step up perhaps learning from Jones example. Jones himself was flawed only due to the lack of capacity around him to follow and his own skills limitation which were a consequence of him being forced to undertake too many tasks.. I hope the clubs new coaching structure can identify an improved model but more importantly can communicate this in a positive fashion to players and supporter sports so we are all united.
  8. That is certainly still relevant. Thanks for sharing
  9. That is a great analysis and reference. Can hardly disagree with the luminaries quoted. I still say however the coach is the most significant role to prepare the players to respond to the things that are beyond the coaches control on the day. There is an amount of individual instinctive response but the most important feature of our game is the teammates responsibility and faith in each other, that team includes the coach. Thanks for the excellent response.
  10. Partly agree not totally Goodies fault, but it is his responsibility to get the players in the right spots, with the right match ups, and the right attitude to win. He also has capacity to remove players and move players to exploit opposition weaknesses and counter opposition strength. The coach and the players need to have faith and n each other and themselves. It's a team game and the coach is the most significant part of that team. He may need individual players to inspire and create but he must also teach the team to respond to that individual act.
  11. Emotional or behavioural. Not sure what is hard or soft. As I understand it e or b takes into account a more comprehensive model of economic factors and reactions than the old "all things being equal" model . This is a consequence of having more sophisticated technology that can analyse more than one factor. Ultimately it is all still conjecture.
  12. Oh I meant to ask if any of you had opinions on emotional economics as a practical approach to merge what can appear as conflicting theories.
  13. I have just read this thread having somehow being deflected to it but very happy I was. i started liking nearly every post, appreciating the considered and in depth ananlysis everyone was contributing. i cant say I am any more knowledgeable than all contributing. i scraped through matrices economics, lucky to get employment in health industry as computers were invented and progress , social and economic, charged ahead. Worked in local rural community, regional programs , state wide providers and regulators, private business, large and small, as senior administrator and owner operator. I completed a tertiary qualification as a mature age student which reinforced my economic, political and general knowledge and experience. i have made some comments on other threads which probably evidenced both my confusions and ignorances, but I do enjoy the stimulation of debate. I did recently reflect that some amazing outcomes of our current society is that the bushfires and Covid have with much brutality shown that as individuals we are powerless but as communities we are strong. This reinforces to me why we need governments even with their obvious failings. Western, Eastern, Liberal, Fascist ,Comminism have all had some successful measures mixed with their obvious deplorable failures. It is a pity we cannot construct an amalgam of the best. Religion of all faiths has also much to be criticised for. Some of their underlying principles are fantastic only to be destroyed by their own operatives actions. i could despair but being a demons supporter has entrenched a resilience that I hardly thought to define. i am still positive and hope that your respective alternative views continue. I would love to take the conversations to the MCG and interrupt any ideological discussion with the distraction of the Dees premiership thrust
  14. Maybe waiting for Richmond to relocate to Tassie so space opens up in the MCG precinct. Richmond (Tassie) tigers obvious rebrand to leverage off the new home in North Hobart (Richmond). Did I see they ate opening the season there????
  15. There should be a team aim for Ben Brown to kick the ton.
  16. Lets hope the coaches can get the team to make Brown our next phenomenal forward. If he can get 100 ( and his records of 70+ at northwould indicate he could) we would be well on the way to success. Other forwards will pick up goals around him if we make him our focus. Not BHAG but 100 for Brown should be our aim.
  17. Should have added I appreciate the insight and the conjecture. Helps informed comments so please keep it coming.
  18. There's some great research here and a lot of assumption and projection. Also plenty of passion displayed . Congratulations and thanks to all who have contributed. i still think it's a early to predict and want to see the whole list advance and be capable of playing in the best 22 Fillng a role and matching up to the opposition and beating them no matter what attributes they bring.
  19. You make a good point. Melbourne was rarely televised and we would see Robbie do things that other players were praised for every match. We often did not even have highlights from the match and when there wereselected images they involved the controversial or the final score shot. Robbie only ever got recognised in the state games where bigger numbers of spectators and viewers saw him play. Still can't understand why he didn't win a Brownlow, he was clearly equal to or better than a lot of winners. Perhaps he set the bar so high for himself that the umpires overlooked his ordinary brilliance and only gave him recognition when he was exceptionally brilliant.
  20. ThanksGotO Does diminish my comments on the credibility but don't step back from other comments. Still relevant I think.
  21. Ive seen some of your comments before L and usually find you quite rational and with good insight so I am really hoping you are wrong with this. Again you are right about our current ladder and we will be on our knees if still bottom four by round 6 so I hope that any mess can be better handled than our past has shown. Board disharmony is not necessarily a bad thing if it comprises healthy debate and full and open discussion of a range of alternatives . It is important to then agree on direction and unite so hopefully that can be achieved. I think all clubs, will post losses this year but again it is coming out of this that is important and their is plenty of govt support now being distributed. That is where I feel Port Melbourne options have great potential for govt support. The area has been identified by both parties and private sector as ready for development, with all the advantages that greenfield sites offer. However Casey obviously has existing population and community value so cannot be ignored. I think that with our current list and their obvious potential we must have a good season and then our supporter base will grow and the economic stimulus become more manageable. There is no doubt we need sustained success to really grow our club and become the power that Melbourne Football Club should be. The coach must get this right and get this group up and running and they can then win the next 4 flags GO DEES
  22. Wasn't icing up and icebaths meant to improve blood flow and ask bruising, help repair. Stretching definitely overworked but I recall Hawthorn at their peak and ntroduced passive stretching before during and after games. Nothing quick and brutal which they did on the field. i always liked to warm up for tennis and squash but find now that if I warm up to much that m buggered by the time the Mach starts. A few stretches to see what hurts and a bit of movement to avoid too much pain is now the go. Every one is different I guess.
  23. Could have added that those" in the know" may be subject to insider trading or conflict of interest regulation. So I assume none of that went on so ROI decisions would be applied.
  24. I think a govt process allows for compulsory acquisition, with values set by independent body. I think that also follows set negotiation processes. As DJ I think said there is still some commercial areas which might be conducive to alternative relocation exchange etc. Should have been a consideration in phase 1 of the process I'd imagine
  25. Thanks NC Had not seen that articulated. Was there any detail of the initial phase analysis of options? Was Port Melbourne included in that? 4 year process probably not too long for a substantial development, but it would be good to see the announcement and that the preferred site was in fact The site. Until then I restrain my excitement as it still doesn't look any more real.
