  1. If we don't get Cameron then I would seriously look at McCartin if he was available.
  2. I think so too 'Pennant', Roos is a pretty decent media operator. When he said "Good question Gary", he didn't answer it, just deflected. I think they have a pretty good idea of who they want and when they want to announce it and are quite prepared for the media to speculate all they like.
  3. I don't think it would have mattered that much, he was lacking in too many areas to be a top line player. I think that's true. I see it as a player able to do the extraordinary and not just once or twice in a career that's why I named the players I did. I don't see this in Col, I do get what you are saying though based on your definition.
  4. That's the danger where the AFL are the default owner of the club (GWS). It wouldn't surprise me either.
  5. No, but as you posted earlier you would have no idea because you haven't seen any games.
  6. His on field actions getting rubbed out for stupid misdemeanours prove the point.
  7. Agree with you, he is not a natural footballer for all the reasons you give. His skills and attributes in isolation are good, he can mark, he can kick, he can run, he is strong...he just can't put it all together to be a good footballer. I think there is doubt on what the recruiters look at though, in particular ours of recent past. Maybe if they had looked at things a bit more clearly we wouldn't be where we are now.
  8. The guy can play, that's never been at issue. However if we were to get a 30+ year old into the group he would want to be bringing leadership by the bucket loads like Cross does and really shouldn't need to get his head right at the stage of his career. He would also need to be durable. These are both negatives for Waite so that's a no from me.

    Umpires

I get annoyed when an umpire makes a mistake as I do when a player does. What I can't stand is the way the umpires are being instructed to officiate the game, it is beyond the joke. The Evans, Campbell, Kennedy regime is an abject failure.
  10. I was talking about his X-Factor and I never saw it, to me that is the ability to break a game apart. Cyril has it, Motlop has it, Gary senior had it...mercurial footballers who could turn a game with something out of the box. Col has never had this.
  11. When did he show it 'Bob'? He is a well built player who rarely used that strength at AFL level and I never saw the endurance you speak of. He was (I think he may have played his last senior game) and is a very limited footballer who has been highly over rated by people who thought he had this amazing ability that he has never had. It wasn't in his mind, he just wasn't good enough.
  12. Don't agree with this, I know it's been said on a number of times and I've said this a number of times. Col has never had the ability to be the player many seem to think he should have been and he's proving it this year as he has every year of his career. He's just not that good, he has no x-factor, he's a long kick to no one who can take an occasional good mark.
  13. Always pictured you as a muso, with the Steve Jordan thing going on there.
  14. I don't think that's true 'steve' but would defer to 'weber' on this if he is around. Any other sports med guys might be able to tell us.
  15. I'm not saying he's not or that we shouldn't take him. Just pointing out that he has some deficiencies at the moment, it's good to have a balanced discussion.
  16. He's not explosive like a Dangerfield but he is strong like a Martin and he uses this to advantage. His average numbers prove nothing about what I'm saying, he can draw the ball to him as he should with the hands he's got... if you look up the ground he would be one of the first you would kick to and he can and will get a lot of contested ball. Where I got it from is from watching critically and I agree these are things that can be worked on and he seems like a kid that will put in the work, that's not at issue. We really should look at the whole of the player and what he brings, I'm just pointing things out that I observed. Not contested ball but in the clearances. It's the same thing I noticed last year with Sheed. The other big issue is if he can develop the tank to play as a mid. Not all people can despite the amount of work they put in.
  17. I haven't seen the explosiveness in Petracca, he certainly is strong, has a great attitude, is competitive and takes a good contested grab. The downside is he's not a natural mid and doesn't position himself or read the ball off hands very well at clearances.
  18. What would you give for Tomlinson 'Machsy', I'm a bit undecided about him but looks to be on the way home.
  19. Let's wait and see on this.
  20. I think the 2 premiership coach thing is a bit of spin 'Mike'. Now technically Scott is a premiership coach but the players virtually coached themselves for that one. The smartest thing Scott did, and I'm not underselling it is to not let his ego get in the way. I still would like Ling at Melbourne in an assistant's role at least and have been calling for it for well over a year now. edit: well actual over a couple of years now. Posted 15 May 2012 - 12:13 PM I've seen a few posts lately about bringing Lloyd to Melbourne and others about Royal as midfield coach, the development of our mids etc. So let me throw this one out there. We could do a lot worse than pursue Cameron Ling to be our midfield coach next year. When he retired he said he wanted a year away from football and would spend some time in the media before considering his next move. With the respect he holds in the football world for his ability, leadership, work ethic and not to mention he seems to be a pretty decent bloke, he would be a great addition to our coaching structure. stuie and dpositive like this Like This Quote MultiQuote
  21. For the same reason I wouldn't pick a singer by watching the voice I wouldn't pick a coach watching the recruit.
  22. Sounds like he has borrowed the Paul Roos book of quotes when asked about coaching.
  23. Even 5 would be well over the odds. 3 years it would have to be.
  24. It's where we a missing Cross at the moment. He not only does the job on an opposition player but still gets a lot of ball himself.
