Welcome to Demonland Josh Schache
I honestly can't see us losing a game next year with Schache in the team.

We cannot draft again from WA
I'm not sure we never draft from WA again, but it has to be a factor, particularly at the top end of the draft. Jackson wasn't comparable to any other player in the draft, but why would you take a WA midfielder over a Vic midfielder if they are otherwise pretty similar.

Farewell Luke Jackson
I can't believe we played Jackson through the second half of the season when it was clear to Blind Freddy and his dog that he was leaving. He couldn't have been looked less interested in being a Melbourne player through that period, and certainly did nothing to enhance his trade value. I wish him a meaningless career at Fremantle finishing 15th in the B&F each year in a side that goes nowhere.

Farewell Sam Weideman
I'll say it again, I thought the point of entering into trades was to improve our list. The Hunt deal didn't improve our list, the draft pick swap didn't improve our list, any potential deal for Tomlinson won't improve our list and this deal won't improve our list. Why are we trading out handy depth players for crappy draft picks that are being sent to other clubs? Time for Tim Lamb to put on his big boy pants and get some results.

JVR, Laurie, Howes, AMW, Turner, Chandler
Van Rooyen looks a beauty, but we'll need to be patient. (As an aside, I can't see Petty playing forward when he'll be needed to replace May in the next year or so. I'm not as sold on Turner as others around here. Not big and not quick for the role we want him to play. Doesn't really impose himself in the VFL to date. Laurie and Howes look a long way off to me given their output in the VFL final series. Laurie needs to work harder to get more involved in the game, whilst Howes probably just needs time in the gym and miles in the legs. Hopefully they can both have a big pre season. Chandler has been on the list four years and has shown nothing much to date. You can argue about opportunities, but does he really demand them? He had the chance to come in and impress late against a tiring West Coast and managed to get himself suspended in a 5 minute cameo - that's just plain dumb. Woewodin meets every challenge he is faced with and I think he will push for games next year. Moniz-Wakefield is a very long shot of ever playing AFL, ditto McVee.

2022 Player Reviews: #29 Jayden Hunt
I thought Jayden's form for most of the year was pretty solid, and I certainly would have more confidence in him playing a role next year than either Hibberd or Smith. Ultimately I don't really see the point to letting best 22 players walk for the proverbial packet of chips, particularly for the sake of $100K or so. Good luck Jayden, and thanks for your efforts over the past 9 years.

2022 Player Reviews: #12 Toby Bedford
A fourth year player averaging 8 disposals and 1 goal across 8 games - I think he received all of the opportunities that his performances deserved. His speed and goal sense are handy, but overall he doesn't get in the right positions often enough at the highest level. If GWS reckon they can make an AFL player out of him, good luck to them.

2022 Player Reviews: #38 Mitch Brown
I could certainly make a case for Mitch going around again in a similar role on a minimal salary given our lack of key forward depth. He has done everything we could have asked from him in that position and at that stage of his career. That said, I'm not surprised he is moving on after an AFL career spanning 14 years. Well done, Mitch.

2022 Player Reviews: #19 Fraser Rosman
The 2020 national draft is not shaping up as being a good one for the club. As much as you hope every kid coming through the door has a long and rewarding career, I didn't see anything to suggest that Rosman had the makings of an AFL player. I'm glad we made the call now rather than dragging it out for another 12 months.

2022 Player Reviews: #28 Majak Daw
Disappointed he left when we were critically short of talls. Could have battled through and played in a premiership at Casey, or pulled the pin earlier and allowed us to find a replacement. Having recently read his book, I hope he is in a good head space and getting the support he needs.

2022 Player Reviews: #6 Luke Jackson
A major disappointment for most of 2022. A great athlete to be sure, but I'm not sure he's a great footballer. Certainly he struggles with some pretty basic fundamentals, amongst some brilliant bits of play. I can see why Fremantle are keen, without wanting to sell the farm for him. I don't think he'll ever be a key forward, and he is undersized as a ruckman. Can he get fit enough and win enough of the ball to play the midfield role Freo want him for? I'm pretty happy to bank two first round picks and move on.

Farewell Luke Jackson
I can't believe people are (a) surprised and (b) complaining about getting two first round picks for Jackson. We have no bargaining power in this deal, and even less so if North commit to using PSD pick 1. Would people prefer Jackson walks to West Coast in the PSD? The Lever deal is absolutely comparable and the Fremantle offer is slightly better than what we gave Adelaide. I'd be taking the two picks today and moving on to other things.

Welcome to Demonland Josh Schache
I'd really love to know if we put any work into Wright, because he has been an absolute steal by Essendon.

James Harmes off to Essendon?
I thought that the point of trading players was that you improve your list. Letting Hunt walk for pick 52 (a pick we may not use) is a clear step backwards. Getting rid of Harmes for anything other than a top 10 player would be an even bigger step backwards, and even then I would be reluctant given his versatility and cultural importance. If the reason for doing so is to bring in damaged goods such Hunter, then this becomes even more questionable. We have had a good reputation for respecting contracts and looking after players in recent times. Even the faintest hint to a player such as Harmes that he should consider his options whilst under contract is really disappointing. If nothing else, I would hate to be relying on Sparrow or Jordon to step up if we get injuries to one of the big 3 in the midfield.

Farewell Jayden Hunt
I can think of at least ten players I'd move on before Hunt, including both Smiths, McVee, and Hibberd in similar roles. Disappointing decision by the club not to look after him.
-
Farewell Toby Bedford
I'm no fan of Bedford, and wish him well at GWS, but I find it really concerning that we now have three players who have been offered contracts for 2023 and have then asked to be traded. Presumably that is opportunity for Bedford, money and certainty for Hunt and family for Jackson, but at least two of those we should have been able to manage. It's great that we have been able to sign Petracca and Oliver on long term contracts, but overall our list and player management has been so so at best. And now we are starting to see the consequences of this.
-
Culture
I'm particularly interested in the element of culture that says Geelong, Richmond and other contenders have a massive chunk of their salary cap available to pursue high profile free agents every second year, whilst our better players are signed on huge dollars which restricts our ability to improve our list.

Casey Demons Best & Fairest 2022
Any regular Casey viewers have thoughts on the B&F votes? Hard to argue with the top 4 -5 players, but I thought Brown, Bedford, Tomlinson and Weideman all had better years than Laurie and probably Woewodin as well. Well done to Munro, Dunstan and White who carried the team to a premiership and were deservedly top 3 in the B&F.
-
Farewell Jayden Hunt
Playing 40 of 49 games across the past two years, including missing games through injury in late 2021, suggests Jayden is clearly a best 22 player. Our VFL depth is so poor, we can't afford to be losing best 22 players for nothing, as there are no replacements coming through. I really hope we make him a decent offer and he chooses to stay. I would hate to be relying on a 33 year old Hibberd or a brittle Smith to be playing many games next year, and I'm not sure we can afford to have Bowey in that role long term.

AFLW: Rd 06 vs Fremantle
Yep, we need to get our percentage back above Adelaide, or we're looking at playing finals interstate. It would be really nice to belt Freo again this time around. West and Purcell have sorted out our contested ball issues, but now we struggle to move the ball with any speed. A couple of line breaking mids / HBFs would be ideal. Maybe Goldrick when she gets back to full fitness or Heath if we push her back up the ground. I think this is a major reason why we stop scoring after half time. Slow ball movement allows teams to get numbers back, and our kicking is not good enough to consistently find targets inside forward 50.

Jordan De Goey
I'm not surprised that De Goey is pushing back against any ambiguity in his contract. Collingwood have repeatedly shown in recent years that their contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on. Treloar and Grundy are prime examples of this. You wouldn't want to get two years into a contract, have Collingwood decide they don't want you any more, and then have the contract torn up because you sneeze in a meeting or something equally trivial.
